The Occitanie region

The climate of the Midi-Pyrenees is typified by mild winters and long warm summers. This area is very green with dramatic gorges, rivers , forests and rolling farmland .There are many historical towns and villages with market squares and narrow streets dating from the XII'th century.

The area boasts many natural attractions such as underground grottos , rivers , forests and gorges

Although you might feel you are miles away from civilisation, you are not, because from St Michel de Vax you can easily visit ten villages classified as amongst the most beautiful in France including St Antonin Noble Val, Penne, Bruniquel and Cordes. There is also the city of Albi with its imposing red brick cathedral.

Saint-Antonin Noble Val

The town of St Antonin Noble Val has a very popular Sunday market where fresh fruit and vegetables , cheese wine and other local produce is invitingly displayed along with many local handicrafts. The town has several restaurants and bars where the evening can be enjoyed in the company of the friendly and welcoming locals.

Cordes Sur Ciel is a spectacular bastide town perched on top of a hill whose steep cobbled streets can be leisurely explored. The town boasts a medieval festival and many visitors take the chance to join the parade in costumes from medieval times. Children love the face painting and the musical performers while the parents can enjoy the food and wine. There are several museums , art galleries and restaurants where lunch can be enjoyed from terraces with spectacular views

The area is of particular interest to those who may want to enjoying canoeing on the Aveyron river , cycling, walking, rock climbing , caving, horse riding and bird watching. There is a small resort with a swimming pool less than 20 minutes away by car. For the children there is a water park with heated pool and activities at nearby Cordes

A local train journey from Cordes through the gorges to the historic village of Najac is not to be missed.

The countryside around St Michel is teeming with wildlife including deer, wild boar, owls, bats and many species of bird life.

The area around the nearby town of Gaillac is famous for its local wines and there are many producers where you will be invited to taste the wine and tour the vineyard. Competitions are held every year.

There is a golf course just outside Gaillac where the view of Albi from the hole number 10 is quite superb and several others in the area.

The managers of the house who live nearby will be happy to provide plenty of information on local activities to ensure an enjoyable holiday.

“Peaceful relaxing holiday”

Reviewed 20 Aug 2012

If you're looking for a peaceful relaxing break then St Michel de Vax and Walnut Cottage is a must with all the wildlife and country lanes that provide good walks, although a vehicle is essential St Antonin Noble Val is a short drive away. The large market here is well worth a visit. All in all we had a very relaxing holiday and would return.
