The Midi-Pyrénées region
Historic sites near Le Combal are Najac, Cordes-Sur-Ciel, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, Villefranche-de-Rouergue as well as the gorges of the Aveyron (Castles of Bruniquel and Penne).
Also nearby, the vineyards of Gaillac cover the hillsides where many of the chateaux offer wine tasting.
Quercy-Rouergue in West Aveyron is a greatly undiscovered region with stunning natural beauty and unspoilt charm. Aveyron is famous for Laguiole knives and gourmet cuisine (Roquefort cheese, beef, duck, wild mushrooms, sweet chestnuts, walnuts, foie gras and possibly the best food in the world: Aligot!)
The region is dotted with medieval towns and villages, local markets, ancient castles, wild rivers and chestnut forests. The clean rivers are great for swimming in & fishing. During the autumn, a variety of wild mushrooms can be gathered in the extensive oak & chestnust forests including the famous cèpes (porcini) mushrooms.
Gîte Le Combal is situated just 8km (5miles) from the picturesque village of Najac and its medieval hill-top castle. The holiday property is on the outskirts of the smaller village of St-André-de-Najac which has a very good restaurant and café (Relais Mont Le Viaur), a general grocer's shop, post office and music bar. All within an easy 15 minute stroll from the property.
St-André-de-Najac is great for outdoor activities such as: hiking and walks in the adjacent chestnut woods, cycling on the lanes, mountain biking on woodland tracks and tennis on the village court. Pottery classes & mini golf are available just outside the village.
Lagarde-Viaur is just 2km (1.2miles) from the holiday cottage for: swimming in the river Viaur, fishing and rock-climbing. During summer evenings, on the banks of the Viaur river, there is a welcoming café/restaurant with live Jazz.
Nearby Laguépie has a campsite with cafe, childrens playgrounds, waterslide and crazy golf -all open to the public.
Najac, awarded 'one of the most beautiful villages in France', has excellent canoeing, fishing, a tree top zip-wire adventure course, rock-climbing, mountain bike rental and horse riding. Explore the medieval cobbled streets, old buildings, boutique shops, bars and restaurants. The climb up to its church and ancient fortress is well worth the effort.
Najac has a good bakery, newsagents and gift shops. Laguépie and La Fouillade villages have more choice for food shopping and are less than 10 minutes drive from the property. Both villages have a good butchers, bakeries, grocers, chemists, newsagents and small foodstores. La Fouillade village also benifits from a reasonably sized Intermarché supermarket with petrol station. A Larger selection of shops and big supermarkets can be found at the town of Villefranche-de-Rouergue -20 minutes drive north of the property.
