Description

The area is within a short drive of 15 glorious beaches and there are mountains and gorges and the Amari Valley to explore. The Minoan palace of Phaestos is not far and the lively resorts of Plakias and Agia Galini and the historic city of Rethymnon are each about half an hour away.

Villa Karydia is a fully-restored stone villa on the edge of Mourne. The village is traditional and has a lively kafenion and a few kassanis (raki makers). It is a small farming community but there are also a dozen foreign-owned houses. 4 km down the hill is the lively town of Spili, where there are bars and tavernas.

We have created a lovely guest suite with independent, secure access. The suite comprises two bedrooms, a shower room with basin and toilet and a private roof terrace with country and mountain views. Bedroom 1, which is air-conditioned, has a double sleigh bed and Bedroom 2 has two single beds which can also be a sofa (one slides underneath the other) or a king size bed (they can be bound together). There are facilities for preparing and storing snacks and light meals.

Getting around

You will need a car. There are bus services from Spili and coach or boat trips from Plakias or Agia Galini but a car is really essential to get the most out of your visit to this part of Crete.

Interaction with guest

I am Kevin, a newly-retired Englishman. I've owned Villa Karydia since 1994 (when it was a total ruin) and I now live here from April to October or so. Either myself or local friend Gina will be here to greet you (unless otherwise arranged). The suite gives you privacy and I will, of course, respect that so, if you prefer to keep to yourselves, that's absolutely fine. I will be on hand for emergencies and, if you wish, do join me for a glass of wine or two and I'll be happy to share my knowledge of the area. I speak a little French and German and a shamefully small amount of Greek!

House rules

There are currently three cats in the main house (not your suite) so our guests need to be comfortable with that. Sadly, it also means that we cannot welcome other pets.
Smoking is permitted on the roof terrace but not inside the house, please.
No loud music or outdoor parties after 11.30 pm please.
Loo paper and other disposal items in the bins and not in the loo please.
Children are welcome but parents need to be aware that the house is not ideal for smaller children.

“A great holiday”

We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Crete and were really pleased to be staying at Villa Karydia, even though we arrived in the wee small hours. Kevin our host, offers a warm welcome, an excellent breakfast, very comfy beds, and lots of useful information of places to visit in the surrounding area. We enjoyed meeting folk who live locally in the village and getting to know Crete and it's history. The Villa is in a central location on the island, away from busy tourist hot spots, a hire car is essential, and you will experience the wonderful scenery on offer in the immediate are to Mourne. Thanks Kevin and all the best with the novel. Hope to see you again.

How do damage deposits work?

If Kevin (the owner) agrees, they’ll send you a revised quote outlining the changes. You can review and accept/decline this from the Manage your holiday booking page. You’ll have 48 hours to take action before the revised quote expires.
