The Ionian Islands region

Kefalonia is cited as the jewel of the Ionian Islands, it boasts natural contrasts from its enchanting shores and beaches to its breathtaking mountains and geology, combine this with the people, the ambiance and the weather and you have a holiday of a lifetime. Kefalonia also known as Cephalonia is one of Greece';s mos beautiful Islands, largest of the Ionian islands. Every year thousands of tourists from all around the world visit its shores. No island in Greece offers the same feeling as Kefalonia and no matter how close they may lie; Kefalonia stands alone as a unique holiday experience. Kefalonia even has its own following of holiday devotees who love the island so much that they return year on year. Some love it so much that they have chosen to live there permanently. The islands scenery is so different to that of the other Greek islands, even though Corfu and Zante are so close neither manages to enjoy stunning landscapes from soaring mountains to lush pine forests and from fertile valleys to glorious beaches of Kefalonia. Lush green fir-capped mountains reach high up into the clear sunny sky, picturesque headlands, watery inlets, golden bays and fantastic beaches spread around the island.

The island's people are fantastic, known for their friendly banter and raw sense of humour, while the island may have a relaxed atmosphere its people are forward thinking and manage to weave the old ways into modern culture. Kefalonia is far from old fashioned as has some of the most trendy apartments, hotels and beaches in the Ionian islands! Kefalonia was devastated by an earthquake in 1953 which has given rise to a new modern island, reborn from the ruins with new buildings and a new style that is wonderful, especially when complimented by the beautiful weather and clear blue sea that encompass the island. The food in Kefalonia is typically Greek although all resorts have a large choice of food to suit everyone. The food on the island is generally high quality as the Ionian people enjoy good food and meal times are often the highlight of the day. The island is also well stocked with drink, with many brands available from locally produced beer and wine to imported national brands. If you fancy a trip during your holiday Kefalonia has a sister island Ithaka which is just a short boat trip away, however Kefalonia has plenty to see and do. If you had to pick just 2 things to see during your visit we would suggest the underground lake at Melissania cave and the stunning Myrtos beach as both are wonderful sights.

Spartia

Spartia resides on the south coast of the island south, nestling in to the flank of Mount Aenos and commanding breathtaking view of the the Ionian sea and the Island of Zante. Spartia village is a pretty Greek village which sits on a hillside above the beach , within easy reach of the airport and only a short 15 minute drive into Argostoli, the buzzing Capital. This small village still retains much of its original charm and character, untouched by the rapid passage of time and offers a few small grocery stores and a handful of tavernas. Its maze-like streets were reputedly designed to confuse invading pirates in times gone by but nowadays, some well-positioned signs take you down a quiet country lane, past a few tavernas, to an attractive sandy beach. A little further down the coast lies the rocky Cape Liakas, with stunning views across the bay and usual rock formations, ideal for snorkelling. There are beautiful beaches within a short drive including Spartia, Avithos, St Thomas, Trapezaki, and Lourdata . St Georges Castle is definitely worth a visit, if only to sample the delights of The Castle Cafe, the baguettes are to die for! Drive a little further inland through a delightful landscape and you come to the monastery of St Gerasimos, the patron saint of Kefalonia. The monastery is very conveniently located for the co-operative winery, where you can sample the local Robola wine, and buy a bottle or two for sipping later on the balcony! Going further afield, the North of the island has a special atmosphere, with Assos being one of our favourite village. It may take an hour to drive there, but it's worth it! Just fifteen minutes on from Assos, and you come to Fiscardo on the tip of the island, the only village with its Venetian architecture saved from the 1953 earthquake. From Argostoli you can take the ferry to the Lixouri peninsular, which runs every thirty minutes in the summer, every hour at other times. If you're lucky you may see dolphins on the way. Take a day trip to Argostoli and you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables at the market, sample one of the harbourside tavernas, and, if you're really lucky, spot one of the loggerhead turtles that have made their home in Argostoli bay. Kefalonia also known as Cephalonia is one of Greece's most beautiful Islands, largest of the Ionian islands. Every year thousands of tourists from all around the world visit its shores.

“Spartia Villa Review”

Reviewed 23 Sep 2013

The Villa is of a high standard and benefits from excellent sea views. Situated in a peaceful location but close enough to amenities and restaurants. The interior rooms are all good sizes and well finished. The pool and garden area is lovely with the benefit of a pergola and barbeque area which has good lighting for use at night. The pool is a touch too small for the size of villa and would be a bit cramped for large groups. The weekly change of towels is insufficient; we would have preferred a cleaning service and change of towels 2-3 times per week. Overall we had a fantastic time in Kefalonia and would recommend a stay at the Amari Villa.

Thank you very much taking time to complete a review. Tripadvisor is very important in this day and age of reviews. Hope to see you again in the near future.

“Beautiful villa in stunning location”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2013

We have just arrived home from our holiday in Amari Villa and will definitely be going back. The villa is set in beautiful surroundings with spectacular views. It was lovely and clean and very spacious with top quality fittings. The swimming pool is beautifully kept (cleaned every day during our stay) and the gardens are perfect for relaxing in. We had our two children with us (aged 13 and 11) and they loved every minute. We loved the village of Spartia which is very small and quiet but we found everything we needed for a relaxing holiday in a truly Greek environment. The local restaurant serves lovely food and the owners are very welcoming.

Thank you for your lovely words. We would welcome you to stay anytime.

“Perfect and a whole lot more!”

This villa really is perfect, you don't want for anything at all during your stay. The villa is superbly equipped with really comfortable indoor and outdoor furniture with uniterrrupted beautiful views all around the property. You can just sit out on the Balconies or by the the pool without getting tired of those wonderful views. It is quiet, peaceful and so relaxing, whilst being close to the capital of Kefalonia and some beautiful beaches. The local taverna and mini-market make you feel so at home. If you don't believe us, try for yourselves, we are booking again for 2013. A little peace of paradise, which for two weeks of the year we can call our home!

Thank you very much for this kind words and taking time to complete a review. Tripadvisor is very important in this day and age of reviews. Hope to see you again in the near future.

“Just Breathtaking”

Reviewed 16 Jan 2013

What a wonderful time we have had at Amari Villa – paradise on the island of Kefalonia. Amari Villa is set in a wonderful, breathtaking location, seeing is believing. As we first arrived at Amari Villa, our breath was taken away by the unbelievable setting. As we entered the Villa, we couldn’t believe the size and the quality of the furnishing. The owners have really thought about comfort and convenience. The open plan lounge, dining and Kitchen occupy nearly the whole of the ground floor. We spent most of our time either outdoors or in the kitchen. Due to the setting of the Villa, we just wanted to spend the whole day just sitting on the many balconies gazing at the wonderful views of the sea, mountains and the Island of Zante. Amari Villa is exceptionally equipped and furnished, everything we needed was provided for. The Island of Kefalonia has so many beaches and sites to visit, however once we were at Amari Villa we only wanted to swim, sunbath, eat, drink and sleep. The small beach, which is only 10 minutes walk from Amari Villa, is secluded and quite, ideal for families. We highly recommend Amari Villa which can be shared with family and friends. We will be returning soon.

Thanks for your review. Hope to see you at Amari Villa very soon

The Villa was just in the perfect surrounding with breathtaking views, it was close to the airport, beautiful beaches with clear water, mini market, bars and restaurants that makes you feel at home. Everything in the villa was perfect too, very clean, fully equipped with everything that was needed and to top it up with really comfortable indoor & outdoor furniture’s…Just perfect. We are sure to book again for 2013 as it felt like being in haven, which for two weeks of the year, we are pleased to pretend it’s our home!

Thank you very much for your kind words. Tripadvisor reviews are very important these days. Hope to see you again in the near future.
