Description from owner

Description

The view of the River Dart from the living room window is breathtaking. The apartment, which dates from the time of Vice Admiral Lord Nelson, comprises a bedroom, bathroom, fully fitted kitchen and living room on the first floor, and a bedroom and en-suite bathroom on the ground floor. There are external doors to both floors. Dartmouth has many craft shops, restaurants and hostelries, and is an ideal base from which to explore the River Dart and south west coast, whether on foot, by boat, steam train or car, as well as the nearby towns of Totnes, Dartington, Kingsbridge and Salcombe, and Dartmoor itself.
Guest Book Comments: "Our 4th. visit to Dartmouth. The best accomodation by far; warm & welcoming, wanting for nothing & spotlessly clean." Sue & Steve, Essex (Sept. 2012); "We came by train & found public transport very good down here. The Apartment is wonderful & the view unbeatable. Thank you for a marvellous holiday." Norma & Carl, Kent

Further details indoors

The apartment has a naval theme, particularly in the tiling of the kitchen and 2 walk-in showers. There are prints of Lord Nelson and a fine telescope. The living room window, beneath which the dining table can be placed, can be fully retracted to maximise the view (see photos). The downstairs French bed can be converted to a sofa to provide a second living room during the day, if required.

"The best place we ever stayed in.The house is spotless and so well equipped. So much happening on the river. Saw seals and dolphins" (Peggy & Maecolm. Manchester, Sept. 2013).
"A great base to explore the area. Wonderful views everywhere & so much lovely food" (Pete & Jane, Kent Sept. 2013).
"Great house. Well equipped. Great location" (Julie & Ian, liverpoool, Sept 2013).

Location description from owner

The England region

With temperatures in the summer that enable sunbathing and swimming in the sea, beautiful countryside to explore, unspoilt country lanes leading to remote beaches, excellent walking and fishing, scenic drives along the coast and Dartmoor only half an hour away, this part of Devon has it all. A ferry will take you to the charming village of Dittisham, and Agatha Christie's house above the Dart, and a steamer to the historic market town of Totnes. You can take a steam train from Kingswear to Paignton, a bus to Totnes and a boat from there back to Dartmouth. The craft centre at Dartington and Buckfast Abbey are nearby.

West Country

The ancient port of Dartmouth, from which the Mayflower set sail for America in 1620, is home to the Britannia Royal Naval College (which can be visited), and has many craft and boutique shops, restaurants and olde worlde pubs, as well as being an important yachting centre. The sea fishing is excellent. There is always something going on in town, and there are annual music, Shakespeare, drama, comedy, arts and crafts, Agatha Christie, walking, fishing, and food festivals, as well as the Royal Regatta, the largest in England after Cowes.

“Best ever”

Reviewed 28 Dec 2011

We have been staying in self catering accommodation for years and the quality of Half Nelson House is A1. The quality of furnishings, nautical theme and location are the best we have experienced. The owner takes great pride and care for their guests including a welcome gift for the adults and children. Everything has been thought of even the toothpaste. Strongly recommend to anyone
