North Devon is a truly unique place to visit.North Devon has managed to maintain a delicate balance between its heritage and modern life. It is a friendly, laid-back and beautiful part of the country.

South Molton

Whitechapel is extremely well placed for exploring the whole of North Devon. We are also situated within an hour's journey of Dartmoor, meaning South Devon is easily within reach too. Exmoor, one of the smallest of Britain's National Parks, is also known as Lorna Doone country as it is the base of R.D. Blackmore's famous novel of the same name. Amongst the beautiful moorland lie several beautiful villages including Dunster - with its magnificent Dunster Castle. Exford is the ideal base to explore the ancient Tarr Steps and to take part in fishing, shooting and riding. Journey time by car to the moor is approximately 10 minutes.

“Little slice of paradise away from the crowds”

Reviewed 19 Mar 2012

On a rainy day in February myself and my wife woke up and decided at almost zero notice to spend a few days away (with our 5 year old) - we packed the car, flipped a coin to decide north or south, and effectively by flipping that coin on route determined we would head to North Devon. Whilst driving down the M6 my wife researched several self catering properties and put calls in to several to determine availability. Without a doubt Chris who took our call was the friendliest, easiest to do business with and most responsive. The property was delightful, small but perfectly formed on secluded farm near an Elizabethan Manor House. Surrounded by woodland and on the edge of the moors its a paradise for birds, with woodpeckers frequenting the bird feeders and birdsong each morning. The fantastic wood burning stove in the property, with a near limitless supply of wood really made the stay for us (less of an bonus if you are travelling in summer) it was great to relax with that on the go, with a nice bottle of wine in the evening. Hot tub, games room, trampoline and loads of space for kids to explore on site. Chris was extremely helpful in every respect. Great location for all the North Devon tourist sites, we went to the zoo, ice skating, the beach, clovelly, valley of the rocks, a couple of different national trust properties. Great for a small family or getaway for a couple. Thumbs up.

“Comfortable accommodation in idyllic location with delightful hosts. Excellent!”

Our second stay at Whitechapel Cottages, the first in the summer of 2010, when we enjoyed kayaking on the lake under expert tuition. This time, our stay was over Christmas, so walking and running around the farm plus a bit of mountain biking. Chris had thought of everything: We were thrilled to find a tastefully decorated Christmas tree, mulled wine warming on the cooker, the log burner burning nicely and a welcome hamper all ready for us when we arrived on Christmas Eve. The play barn was a success with opportunity for family table tennis, pool and table football tournaments, and we enjoyed relaxing in the sauna and jacuzzi. We truly unwind when we stay at Whitechapel, in part because of the warm welcome received and the quality of the accommodation. We look forward to returning soon. PS Our dog seems to enjoy staying at Whitechapel too!
