The Cotswolds region

From www.the-cotswolds.org: The Cotswolds is an area of England renowned for its natural beauty. Popular with both the English themselves and visitors from all over the world ,the Cotswolds are well-known for gentle hillsides (wolds), sleepy villages and for being typically English. There are famous cities such as Bath, well-known beautiful towns like Cheltenham and hundreds of delightful villages such as Bibury, Burford and Castle Combe. Above all, the local honey-coloured limestone, used for everything from the stone floors in the houses to the tiles on the roof, has ensured that the area has a magical uniformity of architecture.

Not all villages are well known, and many still hold their secrets. Amongst the treasures to be found are perhaps a hidden village off the beaten track, perhaps Painswick, Biddestone, Winchcombe or Woodstock, or an unspoilt historic church, such as at Northleach often called the Cathedral of the Cotswolds open the church door and you will discover a hidden world of history.

Today, the larger market towns and villages of the Cotswolds are famous for their shops, such as Stow-on-the-Wold, Cirencester, Chipping Norton and Tetbury.

South Cerney

South Cerney is reputed to be "the largest village in England", and is an easy 10-15 minute walk from the lodge. It is a typical Cotswold village, with a couple fo shops, a post office and a number of excellent pubs serving good food, as well as an Indian restaurant and a fish & chip shop. It is close to the Thames-Severn canal, which is currently being renovated and has several lovely walks.

“Peaceful retreat”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2016

What a hidden gem we have found here. It troubled us that there are very few reviews for this property available online, which is a shame because it is the perfect place for a quiet break from busy life. Situated very conveniently for Cirencester, Swindon, Gloucester, Cheltenham and The Cotswolds - there is never a shortage of places to visit. You can get to Bath in an hour from here too. The accommodation was fine for us (we travelled as a party of 4 adults). It was handy to have 2 separate areas where you could shower which avoids those rush hour queues in the morning. The outside decking was the perfect place to sit and relax in peace and quiet, overlooking a beautiful lake. Yes, there was waterskiing on the lake during late afternoon/early evening - but the noise was not intrusive and it was interesting to watch. The kitchen was well equipped and had a good size fridge freezer. Internet access was good too. All in all, we loved it here and hope to return again very soon.
