“Great Place Great Hosts, Great Holiday”

Reviewed 16 Oct 2013

La Dominique was a beautiful, well equipped holiday apartment in a lovely area of France. The outside seating area was perfect for relaxing in the evening and watching the kids play in the pool. Also plenty of activities for the kids to do, such as Badminton, trampoline and table tennis which we all used to the fullest. Rae and JC were great host and made us feel really welcome, it was a pleasure to meet their lovely family and we were sad to leave at the end of our stay. Would recommend this gite highly and would love to return one day.

“Amazing place for a brilliant family holiday. 5*”

Reviewed 20 May 2013

I ended up at Maison Bleue by [fortunate] accident, as I was looking for somewhere to take three small children for the Easter holidays and needed somewhere child-friendly. Maison Bleue proved to be perfect and I recommend it for anyone looking for a relaxing holiday in the Bordeaux/Charente Maritime area. The accommodation has everything you need and is finished to a high standard with all sorts of thoughtful/stylish touches. Our gite (La Dominique) was spotlessly clean. There is an amazing garden full of exciting toys which is where my children spent most of their time. The garden has lots of different areas, so you can be sociable or enjoy some peace and quiet, sunbathe or sit in the shade. My toddler loved going to visit the local geese, chickens & sheep at the end of the garden. The pool is pristine and always inviting – comfortable loungers, a solar powered shower and all sorts of toys to enjoy. It was hard to drag the children inside at the end of the day! My children are all very young and their safety was of key importance; they were well-catered for and it was really helpful to have all the necessary kit provided on site cots/stairgates/toys & DVDs/washing machine. Having all the baby stuff provided this left much more space in the car to take home souvenirs and wine! Rae was so helpful before I arrived letting me know what was available locally (baby food, English favourites, where to buy nappies etc) and this was useful with such young children The local area had something for everyone – I stayed for five weeks and only just scratched the surface. Despite being April the weather was excellent, even into the high twenties at times, so we enjoyed the sunshine which the area is renowned for. Rae recommended some great places & restaurants, best markets and places to visit and this local insight was really helpful. We spent some time walking/scootering from the house: the surrounding area is so beautiful with woods and meadows to explore. The local town is also charming and has a supermarket en route from the autoroute so you can enjoy being in the middle of nowhere but having everything you need nearby. We went to a great beach, various tourist attractions (chateaux, zoo), charming French towns – lots to explore to keep everyone happy. Rae and JC (and their children) really make this place. They are fantastic hosts; the sort of people who will go the extra mile to ensure you have a great holiday. They are real ‘attention to detail’ people and happy to help should you need it. They even deliver your boulangerie orders straight to your gite in the morning - what a treat. They understand what children AND parents both need and want on holiday, and ensure that both parties are provided for. Maison Bleue really does tick all the boxes; we would all love to go back.

“A wonderful holiday for the whole family”

Rae and JC provide such a warm welcome to their little piece of the French countryside. They have lovingly renovated two gites for guests to enjoy that overlook an inviting pool and landscaped yard with plenty of attractions for the younger set. Their DVD collection and expertise about regional wines were added bonuses. This would be a particularly great rental for two families traveling together. And the 35-minute drive to Bordeaux is really worth it. A jewel of a town! Enjoy!

“Fantastic hosts, tasteful gite and stunning pool and gardens.”

Reviewed 2 Sep 2012

The gite is located in a lovely area surrounded by gently rolling fields and patches of woodland. Really appreciated the welcome pack which included bread , pate, camembert and wine making a delicious instant light supper The gite has been tastefully modernised and had everything we needed. The children particularly loved their bedrooms with sloping ceilings, bunting and even a selection of toys. The fenced swimming pool is absolutely beautiful and located just beyond our terrace enabling us to keep an eye on our 4 year old which we really appreciated. The large gardens have everything any child could hope for - trampoline , playhouse , hammock, football net , table tennis so loads to keep them amused. Major bonus for our children too was being able to play with the children in the gite next door . Being able to order a morning delivery of bread and pastries was a real treat. One of our favourite evenings was spent at the local night food market where one can eat informally at the many trestle tables laid out round the square. One day we went to the beach at lovely Meschers a 40 minute drive away , however our children said they preferred the local swimming lakes 15 and 25 minutes away respectively so these make an excellent alternative to the seaside. JC and Rae proved themselves to be amazing hosts due to our regrettably and unintentionally being very demanding guests! Our camper van broke down which was made considerably worse by very poor European breakdown support. Rae and JC unwavering help meant a stressful situation did not become one that ruined our childrens' holiday. Rae and JC made repeated phone calls helping us locate a hire car and tow truck and they even drove us to and from the hire car garage. They found us a lovely gite to stay in for 2 nights when we could not get towed to the ferry til the Monday and negotiated a very reasonable rate for us . I am sure you wont be in need of such help but the above is indicative of what lovely people JC and Rae are . Maison Bleue is a very special place and my family and i had a wonderful holiday there .

“A lovely relaxing holiday with plenty to do for the kids”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2012

We had a fantastic stay at La Maison Bleue. Tucked away amid fields of sunflowers, corn and vines the property was beautifully peaceful and quiet. On arrival we were greeted with a basketful of local goodies - wine, cheese, pineau, milk etc and a few basics to get us going which was great. Although our first day was rainy, there was plenty for the kids to do - particularly popular were the table tennis table and the trampoline. After that first day, the weather was fantastic and we were then able to fully enjoy the huge garden and swimming pool. The kids loved the play tree-house and other things in the garden but we spent most of our time around the lovely pool. For those people who need a little bit of home we had Sky TV and there is also wi-fi access but frankly, apart from keeping up with the olympics, all we wanted to do was relax and forget about home and work etc which this place makes it very easy to do. We had a couple of nice days out - one to a local lake which was lovely for swimming in and one to a beach called Meschers which is about 40 minutes away where we enjoyed sunset pizzas on the beach. Our only other excursion was to a local night market in a nearby village which had live music and local foods and wines etc and was very enjoyable. The owners - JC and Rae will bring you fresh bread and croissants etc every morning if you ask for them and JC is very adept and recommending great local wines. There was nothing more enjoyable than having a BBQ on our terrace with a few glasses of Bordeaux. All in all a really great find and somewhere I would have no hesitation in recommending to anybody with children. We also went with friends who took the other gite and this was perfect as it allowed each family privacy when needed but we were able to socialise around the pool or over a BBQ. A lovely, lovely holiday. Sad to be back !

“Fantastic family holiday, beautiful location, gite and host- book now”

Reviewed 14 Jun 2012

We stayed in the 3 bedroom gite La Dominuque which looked onto a fabulous fully enclosed pool, so no worries about the children entering on their own.The gite was extremely well equipped and there were touches which made it feel like home. Great range of puzzles and games, we had our first family game of monopoly- my 4 year old was a property tycoon! It was easy to explore the area, supermarche not too far, and the wine shop even closer, for days out we were given recommendations which didn't disappoint. Rae and JC have excelled in making these gites attractive, the bbq, outdoor furniture and loungers were all of high a standard, and when most of the time is spend outdoors, these are high on my list for quality. We had an amazing holiday, the gite next door is secluded , so do not let this put you off if you want privacy, alternatively it makes a great place to holiday with friends or family. The delivery of pastries in the morning is already being missed, this was an above and beyond experience, thank you so much for a great week.

“Fabtastic family break”

Reviewed 4 Jun 2012

My family had a really lovely week holiday at La Dominique. The gite was perfect with everything we needed for self-catering. The owners had quite clearly put a lot of effort on the decor and personal touches to make it a beautiful place to relax. There were plenty of actitivities and games for my four year old son to entertain him, his favourites being the pool an trampoline. In fact we didn't get a chance to venture out in the area much because we enjoyed chilling in the gardens and pool so much. The owner's Rae and JC made us feel so wlecome and were always on hand to answer our questions or give advice on places to visit in the area, and we only scatched the surface as there is so much to see and do! Our only regret is that I didn't book it for two weeks. I would highly recommend this place, and hope to visit again next year.

“a fab place to stay - very welcoming hosts, great facilities, beautiful setting”

Reviewed 9 Aug 2011

What a fabulous holiday we had here. Firstly our hosts Rae and J.C couldn't do enough to make us feel welcome - from a very generous welcome pack inc eggs and milk from local farm to buying cycle maps of the area, booking restaurants, delivering bread to our door... The property is beautiful and has everything you might need inc lots of toys and games for kids. Pool is spotless and kept at a very pleasant temp.and there are plenty of things to keep kids amused eg, trampoline, table tennis, swings. The location is lovely and quiet with rolling hills. Very picturesque but quite remote and you really need a car to get anywhere but within 1 hour are lots of places to visit eg. beaches, Cognac, Bordeaux, etc Great gite hoilday. Hope to be visiting again next year!

“Prettiest and best equipped Gite ever used with friendliest hosts”

Reviewed 12 Jul 2011

An excellent Gite, with good quality (mostly new) english style furniture - very comfy beds, and spotlessly clean throughout. Although small /bijou - very well equipped in the kitchen, lots of games and books to borrow. The pool was fab - heated - and we spent almost every waking minute around the pool (new) patio beds and lots of pool toys for the kids (big and small). The downstairs bedroom was very useful for someone with disabilities or older - the bedrooms are accessed by a wooden stairway that we got use too very quickly. Although the area was quiet, it's in easy reach of Royan (1 hr) with miles of clean beaches and nice eateries. Mirranbeau and Montrondre have very good supermarkets and there was a local market almost every day. Palosite (10 euros per adult) was a fab day out (learnt to throw spears and make fire, with a good restaurant (14 euros for main and sweet) with a good attempt to accommodate english visitors - even our small dog was welcome to join all presentations. The lake at Montrondre was also a good (free) day out - with a dedicated swimming area for children - but also opportunities for our little dog to swim and splash about - they also had a cafe / restaurant - main courses (big enough for men) for 6 - 8 euros. The whole family had a brilliant time at La Dominique and would love to return.

“Perfect hosts and a perfect gite”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2011

Rae and JC are delightful people who not only provide a lovely gite but combine it with a perfect attitude. They are not intrusive but help whenever they can, even down to booking local restaurants. They have big plans to upgrade the gites but they are already very well equipped and extremely comfortable. The pool and gardens are magnificent and well maintained and the location is perfect to either relax or explore
