Périgueux was founded around 0 AD on a hill shaped by the curving River Isle. Its population of 35,000 have a reputation for their friendly natures and cheerfulness. A lot of work has been invested by the city council into restoring the Medieval and Renaissance quarter, Puy St-Front, with its distinct white limestone buildings.

A market town

The town was originally inhabited by a Gaulish tribe called Petrocorri. It was the Romans, however, who claim the credit for developing the town into the department's prosperous capital. An extraordinary collection

The Roman part of the town is known as La Cite. Within this area you will find the Musee du Perigord with its extensive display of local findings. There are a number of fantastic frescoes, mosaics and jewelry items on display but it's most impressive possessions are the alter dating from 2 BC and the three skeletons, which are ranked among the oldest ever found.

"Fantastic and perfect"

On arrival, we were greeted as old friends, Glenn and Roma made you feel very welcome and at home. The house was furnished to a very high standard, and had everything you could possibly need including hairdyryer to cake tins, this part was important to me due to son having birthday whilst there. The outside seating ares was excellent to sit on during the day or evening enjoying a glass of wine or two, or perhaps to just to sit and unwind with a book. We all loved the pool, great to either swim in or just have lots of fun, the pool area had lots of umbrellas and seating area. Glenn and Roma have over 40 acres of land, which the boys played in and loved a lot, they went on the quad bike with Glenn and did archery in the forest. My children's ages range from 17 to 8, and I never heard them once say they were bored, so must have been a perfect place. The property is close to all amenities and Dordorgnes attractions. I tried to book for the whole of the school summer holidays for 2016 but unfortunately they already had some bookings, I am now looking at 2017. Thank you for such a lovely holiday.

"Didn't want to leave!"

Wow what a lovely place, a fantastic house, very comfortable with a lovely pool and terraces which we sat out on each evening playing games and relaxing with the odd bottle of wine or 2. The surrounding area is magnificent with lots to do and see. Absolutely adored Brantome, very picturesque and set on a beautiful river - a place that is a must see. The market at Perigueux is also a must, set amongst the old lanes and squares of the pretty town centre. We purchased lots of tasty fresh produce and then had a BBQ back at the farmhouse in the evening. The owners, Glen and Roma were very friendly and welcoming and have thought of everything for the farmhouse and can give lots of tips on the area and where to eat. We really didn't want to come home.

"Best ever holiday!"

Just had a week at La Chenaie, probably the best holiday we have ever had. Weather has been good, two days a little dull but every other hot, up to 32 degrees. Lovely and quiet but only a few minutes from Perigueux which is full of lovely shops, restaurants and architecture. Highly recommended!
