Newly refurbished (2015), spacious, stylish and comfortable Oak is one of the cottages that make up Buckland Court - it is a deceptively large holiday home constructed from original farm buildings using local skills and materials. The cottage is situated in the rolling countryside of the beautiful South Hams area of South Devon just 10 minutes drive from the stunning Devon coast. Oak offers stylish, comfortable self catering accommodation for up to 12 people and is an ideal venue for family or friends to get together, with plenty of room to spread out and relax - whatever you want to do. The living space is generous and made up of an L shaped lounge with ample seating, table and chairs for card/board games and a TV area with flat screen free view TV, and Playstation 3. A second reception area has additional comfortable seating, a smart TV, Ipod dock and a games table for snooker and table tennis. The kitchen is newly refurbished and offers a large modern, fully equipped kitchen with everything you need including a dining area that will seat up to 14. The house is centrally heated with radiators in all rooms and comes with free wifi/internet access. Outside there is parking for 2 cars in the courtyard and overflow parking behind the stable block. The lush communal gardens, accessed from the adjacent courtyard, amount to 1. 5 acres and include brick BBQ, picnic tables, areas for playing games, playhouse and swings, ponds/water features and a wealth of wildlife all surrounded by lovely countryside, the caretaker also breeds barn owls which prove a great attraction!. Oak Cottage is perfectly situated to make the most of the beautiful South Hams countryside and stunning South Devon coast and beaches. There are walks to suit everyone along the coastal path or inland through woods, fields and of course the Dartmoor National Park is not far away. The towns of Dartmouth, Totnes, Kingsbridge and Salcombe are within easy reach. There are lovely pubs, restaurants, galleries and shops galore. River trips, steam train outings, water sports, sailing, golf, tennis, fishing, crabbing, horse riding - and if you have any energy left there are several child friendly activity parks in the area! The cottage also comes with 25% reduction in fees for the Dartmouth Golf and Country Club (golf course and spa) - 10 minutes away. Unfortunately Oak Cottage is not suitable for STAG or HEN parties or groups of school leavers due to the close proximity of other holiday cottages.
Location description from owner
The England region
The South Hams is an area of South Devon that is one of the prettiest parts of the country - with characteristic narrow lanes, high hedges, rolling countryside and fabulous coastal and rural views. The stunning coast is a mixture of long stretches of beach (Slapton Sands) and lovely little coves (many originally frequented by smugglers) with one of these being the blue flag beach at Blackpool Sands.
The coast is stunning with fabulous walks along beaches or cliffs with wonderful views along the coast and out into the English Channel.
This is a very popular holiday destination for many but remains unspoilt and generally quiet (not much clubbing!) but with plenty to do for all ages and tastes whatever the weather or time of year.
Good pubs and restaurants are used to catering for a discerning holiday maker and there are lovely local towns full of character such as Dartmouth, Totnes, Salcombe and Kingsbridge with shops, galleries and good restaurants. River boat trips up the River Dart, boat trips out to sea, fishing, crabbing, horseriding and golf as well as the steam railway and adventure parks for the kids.
The cottage is in a rural setting just over a mile from the village of Slapton, surrounded by beautiful countryside and only 10 minutes drive from the coast. There are lots of lovely walks to suit everyone straight from the cottage or starting a short drive away including the South West Coastal path. Slapton Ley is a freshwater reserve 10 minutes away with lovely walks round it, bird watching and fishing with lots of information and activities to be picked up from the Slapton Ley Field Center nearby.
There are great pubs and restaurants in the area at Slapton, Torcross, Strete, Beesands, Chillington, Stokenham, Dartmouth, Hope Cove, Salcombe, Totnes.
Kingsbride is the nearest town with supermarkets, local shops, restaurants, swimming pool/leisure centre and tennis courts.
Dartmouth for boat trips out to sea or up the River Dart, shops, restaurants, galleries etc. Also Dartmouth castle has been guarding the town since 1300's is well worth a visit.
Lovely walks from Dartmouth and also Kingswear opposite bank of Dart.
Steam train from Kingswear to Totnes where there is also a castle and a selection of lovely eclectic shops and restaurants.
Lots of lovely beaches a short drive away. The closest is 3 mile long Slapton Sands under 10 mins away. 5 mins further towards Dartmouth is Blackpool Sands - a Blue Flag beach with restaurant/shop/changing facilities. Travelling past Kingsbridge about 20 mins away are Thurlestone, Bantham and Bigbury (30 mins) and Burgh Island (where you can also have a fabulous Sunday lunch in the 1930's hotel there). If you prefer more remote beaches travel about 20 mins to Start Point and walk down coastal path to Mattiscombe and Lannicombe. South Hall Sands and Beesands are 20 mins.
Woodlands is a very good local adventure park near Blackawton just over 10 minutes drive away and there are water sports on offer in the summer at Torcross on Slapton Sands.
The closest golf course is at the Dartmouth Golf and Country Club which is less than 15 minutes drive away. This is a stylish club with stunning championship 18 and 9 hole courses and newly refurbished leisure and spa facilities open to all. Guests at Oak Cottage get a 25% discount on green fees and daily membership of the country club which has pool, gym, spa and treatment rooms. There is also a restaurant/bar with large TVs for satellite sport.
Other lovely courses/clubs within 30-40 minute drive include Thurlestone, Bigbury, Dainton Park, Churston, Bovey Castle, Elfordleigh and Wrangton.

“FANTASTIC COTTAGE, IDEAL LOCATION.”
This cottage has fab features, large bedrooms, great kitchen dining area, cosy lounge and the kids loved the pool/table tennis table. My sister arrived first and sent a text to say 'This place is amazing'. The location is very quiet and off the beaten track, yet easy to find and well positioned to get to the local attractions. Everything you could need is here, and the owner, Jude, is very helpful, before the stay with details of walks and features and she responded quickly to emails. We will be staying again !!
Owner's reply: Thank you very much Steve for your great review - we are delighted that you and the family really enjoyed everything the cottage has to offer as well as the beautiful countryside and coast on the door step. Off season weekend breaks are becoming more and more popular and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Kind regards, Jude
Booked Oak Cottage for 12 of my family for a last minute get away at the end of the school holidays and we were not disappointed. Great room for all of us with no-one on airbeds! Fabulous kitchen diner with all the kit you would need for big family meals. Chill out lounge for the adults away from the kids and bedrooms with sinks in so no queues when teeth brushing. Cottage is set within a row of other holiday cottages but apart from one other dog walker we didn`t see anyone else so felt like we had it to ourselves. Loads of ducks and wildlife in the huge garden for the children to explore and the biggest treat was hand feeding barn owl chicks with the caretaker Simon. A great base for Dartmouth, Salcombe, Blackpool beach (the best) and Slapton Sands. The Tower pub was fab and had lots of character. Would recommend this as a great base for a South Devon holiday.
Owner's reply: Thank you so much for a great review - we are delighted that you found the cottage worked well for your large group. We try hard to provide everything anyone could want away from home and the spacious layout works well for large groups with space, activities (and beds!) for everyone! The barn owl chicks are delightful and I am glad the kids got a chance to feed them and enjoy the extensive gardens. We really hope you and the family will return to Oak Cottage in the future. Kind regards, Jude.
“Perfect cottage for a Devon getaway!”
We stayed at Oak for four nights, and did not want to leave at the end of it! The cottage is beautiful, very spacious and with everything you could possibly need for your stay. The recently decorated bathrooms and kitchen are spotless, with modern and easy to use appliances. We made lots of meals in the kitchen and found that it was very well stocked, with every utensil we needed and plenty more! We had one rainy day but had plenty to keep us entertained with the pool table, PS3 and DVDs in the cottage. We loved chilling out in the living areas which are nice and cosy, with plenty of blankets and cushions dotted around. The communal garden is huge, with amazing views and lots of ducks, chickens and owls to go and see! Simon (the caretaker for Buckland Court) is so friendly and happy to help with any queries about the area or the site - he really added to how much we enjoyed our stay. The cottage is a short drive from Slapton, and we spent hours on the beach admiring the views and skimming stones! We also drove into Kingsbridge and Totnes which are slightly further out but easy to find - we loved how the cottage is tucked away and in complete peace and quiet, yet just a short drive away from three lovely towns. We cannot wait to return to Oak Cottage and explore this area of Devon some more, will be recommending to all of our friends. Thanks for making our stay such a fun, comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable one :)
Owner's reply: Hi Steph, Thank you so much for your review - we are delighted that you all had a lovely few days and enjoyed and appreciated everything the cottage and the South Hams has to offer (even on the wet day!). It is a beautiful part of the country and we have tried to provide a comfortable, well equipped home that people enjoy staying in and want to return to, it is great to know that we seem to be achieving that! We look forward very much to welcoming you back soon. With kind regards Jude
