On the edge of the charming village of Siran, Hortensia Cottage is tucked away in a quiet corner, within easy walking distance of the village centre. Hortensia Cottage is an old stone cottage with 3 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms & 2 totally private walled courtyards to the front & rear, where jasmine & hydrangea grow. Both courtyards are equipped with garden furniture.
The interior of the cottage is pleasantly furnished, in harmony with its village setting. The cottage has a pleasant lounge area with wood burning stove, satellite TV & DVD player. Off the lounge area is a fully fitted modern kitchen/dining area with full oven & hob, dishwasher, microwave & all crockery & utensils. The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The charming village of Siran, with a population of approximately 600, is set in the heart of the Minervois wine growing region. Siran has a small local supermarket, a boulangerie, a friendly bar and two excellent restaurants. The village is 5km from the Pepieux leisure lake for swimming, boating and wind surfing. A short drive to the north east brings you to the beautiful fortified citadel of Minerve with its ramparts and deep canyons. Alternatively, a short drive south will bring you to the tree lined banks of the Canal du Midi. A 30 to 45 minute drive (depending upon which resort you choose) will take you to the Mediterranean coast & the excellent beaches of Narbonne, Gruissan & Valras.
Also not to be missed is the magical walled city of Carcassonne in the heart of the Cathar region, with its narrow streets, restaurants & museums. Carcassone is a 30 minute drive away & is the location of the Carcassonne Salvaza airport, to which direct Ryanair flights arrive daily from Stansted, East Midlands, Liverpool, Dublin, Cork & Shannon airports.
Siran is situated on the Cathar trail & has many fortified towns, villages, chateaux & citadels close by. In the surrounding hills you can enjoy horse riding or even white water rafting. The Mediterranean coast is just a short drive away.
Also just a short drive away is the excellent fortified city of Carcassonne where in addition to the medieval walled city there is a leisure lake with man made beach & life guard supervised swimming. An excellent location for families to enjoy a day out.
The capital of the region is the town of Olonzac which is just 10 minutes away & where there is a lively market every Tuesday.
The village is surrounded by vineyards, many of which are open to the public for wine tours & tasting. An English speaking resident of the village arranges orgainsed tours of the local vineyards which includes pick up & drop off at Hortensia Cottage, wine tastings & a meal. Full details available on request.
There are many paths a trails in the area for walkers. Alternatively, for the more adventerous Andorra is approximately 2 hours drive away with its many mountain & lake walks & hikes.
Ideal for a day trip, Barcelona is 2 & a half hours away by car or why not take the train from nearby Narbonne?

"Excellent stay in very well appointed cottage in lovely village"
Our week-long stay at Hortensia Cottage was brilliant. The cottage itself comprises three floors with a fantasic top floor "suite" occupying the whole floor, including walk-in wardrobe and spacious bathroom. There were two other very good sized doubles on the first floor and ample living space on the ground floor with a well appointed kitchen and very comfortable lounge. The living space is complemeted with not one but two totally separate terraces, one which enjoyed more shade in the heat of the day while the other, larger one was equipped with an excellent stone built barbeque and large dining table. Neither are overlooked and made for great alfresco dining. We also liked the thought that has gone into providing other little extras such as a cool box, tennis racquets (there is a free tennis court in the village), other beach "stuff" for kids, board gamesand plenty of books! Locally, the village of Siran is very pleasant and includes a small general store, boulangerie and decent sized bar/brasserie run by a very nice family, with a lovely shaded outdoor dining terrace less than two minutes from the cottage. A must visit is the beautiful (enormous) swimming/watersports lake and lakeside restaurant just outside the next door village of Pepieux, ten minutes away by car and much closer than the beach. No real negatives about our stay, excellent throughout as was the weather. Suggest a couple of extra fans as temperatures overnight in the summer will get high. Will be back for sure!!

"very comfortable and well equipped"
Clean and tidy cottage, very well equipped with everything you might need to self cater. Two big doubles ( the attic is gorgeous) and one rather smaller one.Lovely bed linens and towels.Cosy lounge with log burner. Lots of things to see in the area, and the village itself is nice.Recommended.
