"Great location, lovely house, super relaxing holiday."
Visited in late June/early July 2014 for ten nights. It was my first experience in renting a home abroad, and with so many horror-stories online, and with few other reviews to be found, I was initially cautious, but Laura who handles this was very accommodating to questions in advance, and both helpful and flexible. All went like clockwork. The property sits in a stunning location, amongst orange groves, near a hill top with a good vista nearby, and directly in sight of the beautiful village of Silves, with its castle illuminated at night. The property is at the end of a half mile track that weaves through a farm (ducks and dogs had to waddle out of the way!) and orange groves, and whilst it gives splendid isolation at the house (no other properties for 200 yards around), it does take a bit of getting used to the drive. The last part before the house was a little steep and bumpy, but we found the best technique to navigate it with practice! If I went again, I'd be inclined to take the no-excess insurance top-up on the rental car, just in case of difficulties. The initial instructions to how to find the property, along with satnav use (not recommended) unfortunately took us up a bad/unusable track, and Laura has already taken my feedback on board as to how to better steer visitors to the right access point in future. But putting those minor issues to one side, the house is just gorgeous. Travelling with my wife, our two grown-up children and partners, one with a 5-month old baby, we all loved it. The house has so much space around, with landscaped gardens, balconys on the top floor and ground floor front, and a super enormous rear patio with shade, huge barbq, and pool. There was always somewhere to sit in the shade, or in the sun, as the day passed. The lounge was enormous, with TV (but couldn't get many UK channels, though understand this may be a teething issue after a dish upgrade). The lounge was light with windows on three sides, and doors to the front and rear. A nice dining room adjoined. The kitchen had all we needed... a dishwasher, fridge-freezer, microwave, washing machine etc. The property was well stocked with every facility and item you'd expect to find in a home... iron, driers, cutlery, crockery, pegs, plugs etc etc. Also downstairs was a cloakroom, a bedroom with 2 single beds and bunk bed setup, two further double bedrooms (one with huge wardrobe area), and a big bathroom with wc, a big bath, shower, bidet. Up an elegant marble (?) staircase was the main bedroom. As I'd paid for the trip, my wife and I had that! It was light, with a doors to a balcony on one side.... to be honest we never had a need to use that. An ensuite bathroom was linked, with shower in bath, wc, bidet. Plenty of parking out the front and side, led to the huge paved patio with pool, and kiddies pool. The pool itself is fenced off, which made it safe for children, and probably kept unwanted wildlife out too. We'd arranged to have the pool heated, and were glad we did.... the water was just perfect to walk into without that moment of (male) caution! The sun helped that a little of course. It was so relaxing to have our own pool, secluded, warm, and always in the sun, from first thing in the morning until way beyond 8pm in the evening. We needed to clean some ants and leaves out a couple of times a day, but that was no issue. the local house manager called by a couple of times to check chlorine levels, and had made a special effort to adjust for a baby, which was appreciated. There were eight loungers (the property can take 8 adults), and cushions for these, as well as other more sit-up garden seats and tables. Again, always somewhere to sit in the sun, though I preferred the shade usually. The weather was just great, sunny most days, warm but not humid. No air-con in the property, but a number of fans if needed. The property, being remote, is not on mains drainage, mains drainage or mains water, and apparently the odd power-cut can happen, but the bottled gas, well-pumped water and drainage solutions were all pretty transparent to us. Silves is a 10 minute drive away, and a lovely village. Pretty, with good parking, bars, restaurants etc. Recommend Cafe Ingles near the castle. You can get to the coast (eg. Carvoeiro in 20-25 mins). Prices are so cheap in Portugal at the shops, and restaurants, we never got over a Sagres beer bottle in the local bar being 1 Euro! The people are friendly and helpful too, and most speak English. As it happened, we so enjoyed chilling at the house, we didn't go out anywhere near as much as planned, some days some of us stayed there all day. That's about all I can say... my family and I are pretty picky on where we stay and the standards we expect, and this ticked almost all the boxes. I wish I were back there now, and we would definitely return again, and hope to do so in the not too distant future. To ensure good availability, maybe I shouldn't be quite so positive with this review!! ;-) Neil
