Location description from owner

The Algarve region

There are two trips the kids really love. The boat tours, from the Albufeira marina, to view the dolphins, caves and unique rock formations and the catamaran day trips, from the Villamoura marina, that includes a sardine beach BBQ and a dip in the ocean. The golden flag Falesia beach, near Albufeira has a variety of water sports on the beach. Villamoura has a lovely beach with water sports and marina with a variety of shops and restaurants. Ria Formosa, a natural park with lots of opportunity to do bird watching. Take a boat from Olhlia to the islands and spend the day on the beach. Family fun at the water parks (Slide and Splash at Lagoa), a visit to the zoo (Zoo Lagos) with monkey islands are brilliant or Zoomarine oceanarium (Guia) with an opportunity to swim with the dolphins are close by. A range of shops, eateries, cinema and Nike outlet at the Algarve shopping centre (Guia) is 15 minutes away. Pottery outlets in Porches and Monchique.

Silves

Kayaking near Lagos is a great way to explore the caves along the coast.

The Moorish town, Silves, is on the river & has a castle, cistern well in the archaeological museum, magnificent cathedral & the Cruz de Portugal (Cross of Portugal). Lots of shops & lovely restaurants to enjoy. Rui's restaurant is very good for seafood, the English Cafe near the castle has great views or try one of the riverside restaurants.

The area around the villa is very peaceful as it is in a protected nature reserve and you are only 5 minutes away from the shops in S B Messines and 15 minutes from the historical town, Silves. Some of the best beaches in the Algarve, Falesia and Olhos d'Agua are only 20 minutes away.

Silves is the perfect setting for the annual Medieval Festival in August with it s narrow, cobbled streets leading up to the castle to a medieval market place. Trestle tables & hay bales are laid out next to the barbecues & spit roasts in the "dining" area & strolling musicians & jugglers entertain.

A typical Portuguese village, Alte, is extremely attractive and has a perfect shaded spot with cool spring waters. Fonte Grande is an ideal place to take the kids and their water inflatables for a day out when they have had too much sun. This area has picnic tables, BBQ facilities, cafe & restaurant. You can walk (or drive) out of the village & along the river for about 2km to the Queda Vigario, the largest waterfall in the Algarve.

Caldas de Monchique was a fashionable spa in the early 20s. Famous for it warm springs. Have lunch in the quiet square under tall shady trees. The region is well known for its medronho (brandy made from the fruit of the strawberry tree) & the scissor chair (wooden chair). There is a pleasant walk in the forest along a stream. En route to Caldas de Monchique visit the Foia peak (902m) the highest mountain in the Serra de Monchique & enjoy views of the entire Algarve coast on a clear day.

The River House villa's sunset pool deck has un-interrupted views of the river and hills and is ideal for bird watching or star gazing.

Spring has a wonderful show of wild flowers. The cistus with its grey-green leaves produces masses of white flowers that shimmer in the sunlight.

Quad bike adventures suitable for all ages is a mere 10 minute walk from the River House. Days trips into the hills with lunch can be arranged.

The River House walking guide map for self guided walking & cycling with picnic spots, hunters lookout posts & bird feeders marked on the map. All routes start & end at the River House.

There are 4 mountain bikes on site can be used at your own risk at no extra charge.
The self guided walking map of the area around the villa can be used for cycle routes.

We're half way on the Via Algarviana, a walking/cycling/horse riding path that runs between Lower Guadiana & Cape St Vincent.

The Silves municipal walking route passes the house to the church on the hill . A tiled plague describes the battle scene in detail that took place over 100 years ago.

A day trip to Villa Termal Das Caldas De Monchique, offers a variety of well being programs, thermal treatments & spa programs. The waters are believed to have medicinal properties. The Hilton hotel also offers fantastic spa programs.
