The England region

The Lake District, also commonly known as The Lakes, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous not only for its lakes, forests, and mountains (or fells), but also for its associations with the early nineteenth-century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the other Lake Poets.

Historically shared by the counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, the Lake District now lies entirely within the modern county of Cumbria. All the land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and longest lakes in England, Wastwater and Windermere, respectively.

The area is of course ideal for activity holidays - particularly walking, climbing, fishing and water sports. Rich in history, there are many stately homes such as Holker Hall, Leighton Hall, with it's falconry displays, Levens Hall (with it's famous topiary gardens) and Sizergh Castle. to name but a few.

Every year there are Country Shows, Beer & Food festivals, Racing at Cartmel and the famous Appleby Horse fair. Music Fans can visit The Kendal Jazz Festival, The Kendal Calling Pop Festival and the two week-long Lake District Summer Music for classical buffs.

Take the kids out on a kayak or rowing boat at the Coniston Boating Centre, or head for the Lake District visitor centre at Brockhole with it's adventure playground, Treetop Trek and Predator Park wildlife experience. Fans of Peter Rabbit can visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery at Hawkeshead or the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction at Ambleside.

Silverdale

The historic village of Silverdale sits snugly on the northern shore of Morecambe Bay in a spot that’s been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, thanks to it's rich diversity of habitats and wildlife. It's deciduous woodlands, limestone grasslands and coastal salt marshes are enclosed by low limestone hills creating a perfect environment for rare butterflies and marshland birds. You can discover the rich birdlife on a visit to RSPB Leighton Moss in Silverdale.

Sunnyside Cottage is ideally located - just 300 yards from the coast and a similar distance from Eaves Wood and it's many footpaths - don't miss the great views from the Jubilee monument known locally as "The Pepperpot".

One of our favourite walks is along the coastal path (or the sands at low-tide) to the quaint seaside village of Arnside - a tempting spot with a pretty Victorian parade of shops along the promenade. Enjoy a pint at The Albion then head back over Arnside Knott, taking in the stunning views of the Lakeland fells across the bay.

Facilities locally are excellent - the nearest shop and pub are both about 600 yards from the cottage, whilst there is a modern co-op, post office, newsagent, butcher and chemist in the village. Food is available at the Silverdale Hotel and there is a small Indian restaurant and takeaway, Cinnamon Spice. There are many pubs and restaurants in the surrounding area, within a few minutes drive.

Silverdale Golf Club has a beautiful 18-hole course and is very welcoming to visitors -food is available here, too. There is a swimming pool, gym and sauna available at the nearby Holgates holiday park. Cycle hire is available locally.

We enjoyed a lovely week in Silverdale. This cottage was well equipped and in a quiet part of the area which has plenty of amenities. An ideal location for exploring the lake district and also further south to Morecambe. We would recommend visiting RSPB Leighton Moss which is on the edge of Silverdale.

My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed our week at Sunnyside Cottage. All communications with the owner were clear and helpful and all instructions in the cottage were very easy to follow. This was our first visit to the area and found it a wonderful centre for short and longer walks. A climb up Arnside Knott is a 'must' for the views and we spent a very happy day at RSPB Leighton Moss (try the scones!). To go further afield we recommend a train ride from Silverdale to Ravenglass (changing in Barrow) with onward ticket for the beautiful Eskdale narrow-gauge railway - buy your ticket for both on the first train and you get a considerable discount. Or if you don't want to go so far, try the Promenade and Gardens at Grange over Sands with an onward trip to Cartmel Priory.

We spent a wonderful week in this comfortable and well equipped cottage. The cottage is well situated for many lovely walks and close to Leighton Moss RSPB site. The village has a small Co-op, a pharmacy and several pubs - so if you do not want to cook there is even a take-a-way. We would recommend Beetham Nursery for a good day time meal and for a wonderful selection of hardy plants.
