What a wonderful garden and pool and BBQ area! Just perfect!

This is the modern 350 m2 home of a local architect, situated in a 10 hectare private fenced & wooded property, mostly Mediterranean pine and cork oak, a 10-minute walk outside of the town of Sils, 65 km north of Barcelona, a short to the commuter train (1h & €6 to Barcelona city center). Built some 18 years ago, this designer house has 6 bedrooms (2 en suite) and a total of 5 bathrooms, along with a 4-person sauna and an exercise room with weights and nautilus machines. By far the most outstanding part of the villa is the garden, with its large triangular unfenced swimming pool, the lovely covered BBQ dining area just out from the kitchen, and the porch, with 4 outdoor sofas & chairs, and outdoor bathroom. It is one of the nicest gardens I have ever seen! A gorgeous private setting under the soothing shade of fragrant pines!

The house: Villa Casadevall was built by a well-known local architect about 18 years ago. The layout is quite logical and easy to explain. The building iconsists of a two one-story wings on either side of a two-story oval-shaped central building with living room on ground floor and office above. The pool and garden are in front, and the parking lot and driveway to the remote control gate behind. The north wing has five bedrooms:

• bedroom 1) an en suite bedroom with a 150x200cm bed, private full bathroom with a separate toilet stall, and access directly to the garden/pool area

• bedroom 2) another en suite bedroom with 150x200cm bed and private full bathroom and also sliding door to the pool area

• bedrooms 3) and 4) two bedrooms with 135x180cm bedroom facing the driveway side of the house

• bedroom 5) a sort of kiddy bedroom with lots of toys and children´s decoration and with one double bed of 135x180cm and a bunk bed with two 90-190cm beds. This room also has direct access to the garden.

• bedroom 6) with two single 90x180cm beds and the bathroom across the hall has a shower stall and the 4-man sauna.

• upstairs there is a 40m2 office space/sitting room with two built-in sofas each with a single mattress, so two more guests can sleep up here, but there is no bathroom up here so groups of more than 12 often place these mattresses in the bedrooms below…

Beyond the kitchen there is a doorway to the gymnasium with weightlifting and static bicycles and other exercise equipment, and then the very large 4-car garage.

The glassed-in living room is bright & spacious, set around a large fireplace. There are two large white sofas and two large poufs and a card table and other assorted chairs, all behind high window panes offering lots of natural light and great views of the pool and pine forest. The lighting is especially nice at night time, with lots of halogen spotlights in the slanting ceiling as well as some free-standing lamps. The TV is on wheels.

Between the living room and the kitchen is the dining table backed by some handsome cabinets where it seems the owners has decided to leave some of his better wine and cognac glasses. However nice this dining room table is whenever I stay here we have all our meals outdoors, either at the fantastic BBQ dining area or just picnicing in the garden.

The kitchen area at Casadevall villa is divided into three rooms, the kitchen, a pantry, and a washroom: The kitchen has a nice food prep island in the middle and a small breakfast table seating four. You'll find the usual double sink, a 4 burner stovetop, oven and extractor, a normal sized dishwasher, a normal 1.8m sized fridge, microwave, toaster, stick mixer, electric drip coffee-maker, stick mixer, juicer, and tea kettle. In the pantry you'll find a large top-loading freezer and plenty of shelving to store your shopping. In the washroom there is a washing machine, a sink for hand washing, and an iron and ironing board.

So there you have the interior which is nice enough but garden is way above average, and the illuminated pool and garden lights at night make for a very attractive ensemble. There is a little building near the pool housing the outdoor full bathroom with shower, so you don't have to go into the house to go. For off-season rentals the sauna indoors makes for a fun and somewhat exotic feature, especially for Spain... The house is also very well cared for by Miquel, the pleasant caretaker (who takes great care of the pool) and even offers to bring you fresh breakfast bread and croissants for your breakfast. He can also bring a keg of beer and there is a cooler and spigot near the barbecue. 30 liters=€90.

All told, a gorgeous property & comes highly recommended! We have 22 testimonials to share with you upon request.

The Catalonia region

What can one say about the Costa Brava?

Often considered a blend of the Côte d'Azur & Tuscany but with a Spanish flair for fun, the Costa Brava is rightfully famous as one of Europe's premiere holiday destinations. Why?

From the breathtakingly beautiful coastline, where wide beaches of golden sand and crystal clear waters alternate with rocky promentories and little coves backed by sheer cliffs topped with pine and oak forests, the Costa Brava boasts 150 blue-flag, top notch beaches. The interior of the Costa Brava is every bit as stunning as the coast (and far less touristy, of course!), with pristine medieval villages set in typically Mediterranean landscapes on the coastal plain, looking very much like Tuscany, and quickly ascending to typically Alpine landscapes as you work your way up into the Pyrenees, with trout-filled streams feeding environmentally protected lakes - like the one in Banyoles - offering a welcome alternative to the coastal beaches, yet only half an hour away by car.

There is always plenty to do. My 90-page guidebook describes 10 routes you can take on daytrips throughout the region. From village to village and including historical sites, recommended beaches, local festivities and folklore, restaurants, market towns, etc -- the guidebook in indispensable for gettting the most of your holiday and steering you clear of the worst tourist-traps in the area. Included are info on the 14 golf courses on the Costa Brava, numerous aquaparks & go-carting circuits, and every town seems to have a horseback-riding club & bicycle rental.

... but of course the main reason for coming to this part of the world is for the good weather, the laid back and friendly local atmosphere, and the excellent and very affordable food and drink. My guidebook explains local dishes, recommends restaurants and cafés, markets and specialty shops, and includes a guide to Spanish wines and cavas. By the way, my favorite local prix fix lunch menus cost about 10 Euros for a 3 or 4 course meal, including wine.

While I am being asked to talk about the Costa Brava, most people enjoy a day trip or two to Barcelona, city center is only one hour away by car or local commuter train. Many guests will also make their way to the Port Aventura amusement park, two hours due south, just off the AP-7 highway, just a few kms from the house. Day trips into Southern France are also recommended, the French border is just a 40-minute drive due north.

When you book your rental villa with me, I will send you a copy of the Guidebook as a .pdf file.

To sum up in one quick phrase, the Province of Girona and Costa Brava is often described as "a quintessentially Mediterranean experience". After only 23 years living here, I couldn't agree more!

Sils

Casadevall villa is a short walk outside of Sils, a town 15 kms inland from Blanes and Lloret de Mar and the southern resorts of the Costa Brava, just off the N-2 and AP-7 motorways, just under an hour's drive from Barcelona (though I would recommend you leave the car in the free parking at Sils station and make your way around by commuter train: 55 minutes & €6 into Barcelona, 15 to Girona, 30 to Figueres, etc. The Sils train station is about 1.2 kilometers from the house, a nice walk through field and a couple old farmhouses, and trains are every hour from 7 am to 11 pm. The location, at the very heart of the Costa Brava and so near the major roads, is ideal vis á vis the main sights & beaches, with plenty of shopping, excellent restaurants, daily markets, PGA golf, municipal tennis for €5/hour, spas, etc.

“Fantastic Villa, clean, friendly and private”

Reviewed 26 Nov 2014

My friends and I stayed at this wonderful Villa this year and will definately be returning in 2015. The accommodation is immaculate and the surroundings are very pretty and peaceful. The Villa has everything you could want, including a fantastic pool and outside area. It is set in it's own woodland so is very private. the guy who looks after the Villa is Miguel and to say he cannot do enough for you is an understatement, a truly good guy. I would happily recommend this Villa to any and all.
