Description from owner

Description

A converted 17th century barn lovingly restored to retain its character and history. Originally built before the Vendee wars but burned by troops of the revolution in the 18th century, evidence of this can be seen on the stones of the walls where the colour has turned from creamy yellow to a rose hue.

It is spacious with lots of natural light and is furnished to the highest standard for 6 guests. A perfect base for exploring the Vendee and its history - or simply relax and enjoy rural France and its Atlantic coastline.

The barn is located near the village of Sigournais and its medieval château. The nearest large shopping centre is 10 minutes away in Chantonnay, although there is a small supermarket in Sigournais where you can buy virtually everything that you might need and this is only 5 minutes away. The Vendee is renowned for its excellent climate - as much sunshine as the Cote d'Azur.

Further details indoors

The mezzanine can have 3 beds for children rather than use the sofa bed, children seem to love this as they all sleep together.
There are a number of books, games for adults and children, CDs for every music taste, DVDs on a number of subjects/films for adults and children. The TV is now for free sat. There is also a second toilet with a wash basin
Pets are not allowed as this is farmland and in the fields around Sigournais are home for many, many cows. The upside of this is that you can buy eggs and milk at the farms.
There is a wood burning fire in the living area - wonderful in winter.
From the patio you look over the garden to the fields to the chateau and its orginal driveway through an avenue of trees.
Baby items eg cots, sterilisers, changing mat, playpen, potty, cot etc are provides on request but only at time of booking.
Bicyles and boats can be hired locally

Further details outdoors

Swimming - there is a beach at the Lac de Rochereau which is 5 mins away where you can swim. Also there is a swimming pool in Chantonnay but there are many sandy beaches within 40-60 minutes for your days out -sable d 'olonne, la tranche, la faute to name a few.
There are 4 golf courses all within an hours drive.
These are Les Fontenelles. Famous for its driving range, this golf course with its many hedgerows provides an excellent succession of water features, maritime pine and oaks over 2 miles.
La Domangère. The highest slope in France with a wealth of shots to be played, this is a delightful course that those in search of new challenges will want to experience. (This is supposed to be one of the more difficult golf courses in France).
Port Bougenay - on the edge of the sea and bordering an enclosed forest, this golf course overlooks the marina of Port Bourgenay. With hedgerows and pine forest, this course provides a two-in-one experience.
Mazieres en Gatine. Set amongst lakes and ancient trees, this course produces surprise after surprise behind each hedgerow.

The Pays de la Loire region

The property is located in the Vendee, a 5 minute drive from Sigournais or 10 minutes from Chantonnay, which is the nearest large town, 45 - 60 minutes from Sable d'Olonne, la Rochelle, Nantes and Poitiers.

The barn is in a hamlet nestling in the glorious countryside of the Vendee and dates from the seventeenth century. Many of the hamlet's original occupants worked at the famous chateau de Sigournais. The location is the place to unwind completely, there is virtually no traffic but sometimes the occasional tractor! It is particularly peaceful.

There are working farms close by and it is not unusual to see cows grazing in the fields around Sigournais. Over the field beyond the patio of the barn you can see the chateau and it's original driveway through an avenue of trees.

Sigournais is a 10 minute walk away. There is a general store, a hairdresser and a bar/restaurantt.

Chantonnay is about a 10-minute drive away where there are many shops including two large supermarkets. There is a general market on Thursday and a food market on Saturday. There is also a cinema and a swimming pool, plus numerous restaurants and bars.

Sigournais

Spend a day at the beaches of Sable d'Olonne, la Tranche or la Faute, take a boat out in the Marais Poitevin (green Venice of France). Go for lunch in the port of La Rochelle and antique hunt in the afternoon or see the sights.

The Lac du Rochereau, 5 minutes from the Barn, is probably one of the most beautiful spots you have ever seen. You can swim from its beach, take a boat out, have a picnic, admire and paint the views, or try fishing for carp.

Go for a day's sightseeing or shopping in Nantes or Poitiers. Nearby there's riding, horse racing, surfing, water sports, cycling, running, golfing and even night clubs for the energetic!

Also there's ballooning, bird watching, walks, forests, canoeing, many places of historic interest, markets, a zoo, villages, lots of bars and restaurants for the not so energetic.

Sigournais is only 25km from the Puy du Fou, the second biggest tourist attraction in France after the Eiffel tower. This is a spectacular day out for all the family. It celebrates the Vendee's wonderful heritage.

“Charming Chantonnay”

Reviewed 28 May 2012

We spent two weeks in this accommodation in Chantonnay in August 2011. Barn has all the mod cons and in great condition. Nice private backgarden where we could sit out and bbq in the evenings. Local village nice and lake nearby was very convenient if you did not want to do a big trip on a particular day. Vanessa was very helpful and we would have no hesitation in recommending it as a great base to relax and also explore the region.
