Description from owner

Description

This house is ideal for someone seeking peace and space for reflection. It is surrounded by a garden, strictly planted with only what traditionally grows on the island (fig, lemon, olive and pomegranate trees, sage, rosemary, lavender, vine and laurel). It is furnished with what we call 'absolutely necessary' but with great attention to detail. Every object has been selected with love and care for its visual or even sentimental value. The owners have decided to let the property intact, that is, without removing any of the little treasures that enrich this magical environment.

The house is built on three levels connected with passages of three to four steps. It consists of a living room, master bedroom, children's bedroom, kitchen and bathroom and has an external guests' room and bathroom. The house and all its terraces are paved with slate stone, as is the tradition on the island. All windows are equipped with pull-down insect screens.

LIVING ROOM: The spacious living room has three windows and three doors towards the outside, one of which is the main entrance to the house. The focus of the room is the fireplace, built with three massive stones and refractory bricks. The furniture consists of two sofas, that can be used as beds in case of the occasional family's extra guest, one large wooden dinning table that sits 8, a late 800's chest of drawers and mirror, two armchairs, coffee tables, etc. A built-in cupboard hosts a rare collection of Italian pottery.

KITCHEN: This is the house's centre. It is a large space accessible from both the living room and the sleeping area, with immediate access to the front patio and back garden. A purpose-built fully equipped fitted kitchen with the every day utility items, hides two built-in fridges and a washing machine. The kitchen area is divided in two: A working area, that is self contained and includes the cooking and washing space and a dinning area with a table that sits four or even six. It is worth mentioning that the kitchen hosts an important collection of over 100 rare, late 19th and early 20th century plates from northern Italy.

MASTER BEDROOM: Strategically situated at the furthest end of the house and overlooking a small rear terrace, the bedroom is dominated by an old, cast iron, four poster double bed. A wall to wall fitted cupboard is partly used for the house's linen.

CHILDREN'S BEDROOM: The children's bedroom overlooks the back garden and has direct access to the rear small terrace. It is furnished with two single beds and a working desk. Two fitted wardrobes provide more than enough space for summer clothing as well as storage of suitcases and bags.

BATHROOM: Situated near the children's and master bedrooms and overlooks the front patio. It is equipped with a sink, a toilet and a full size bathtub. A small collection of old mirrors decorates this 'elementary' gracious little room.

GUESTS' ROOM: The guest room is fully independent from the rest of the house. It has access from the entrance patio but has also a second door that enables extra privacy when needed. This is a very special little room. Two single beds, an ingenious hanging construction for clothing, a small fire place, a collection of oil lanterns hanging from the ceiling, a bench, a stool and the total absence of conventional furniture gives a monastery-cell feeling about it.

GUESTS' BATHROOM: With access from the front patio, this 'Spartan' bathroom is equipped with a sink, toilet and shower.

THE ENTRANCE PATIO: This small patio is a very important part of the house during the summer. Being shaded by an old vine tree it offers a natural shelter, ideal for reading in the afternoon but also, on the eventual windy day, it is a guaranteed spot for peace.

THE REAR TERRACE: Accessible by the living room or the kitchen this large open terrace, offers a spectacular view of the Kamares valley and the Profitis Ilias mountain and Monastery. Its western orientation gives it two great attributes: One can enjoy late breakfast there up until 11.00 am and, in the afternoon, one can watch the sunset towards the Kamares bay. Deck chairs and a very long table that seats up to 14 invite for open air long breakfasts and candle lit dinners.

Location description from owner

The South Aegean region

The house is situated at the highest point of Eleimonas, near the homonymous church, overlooking the valley of Kamares and in front of the mountain of Profitis Ilias offering a superb, unobstructed view of the monastery at its top. It is certainly a privileged, though secluded, position, away from even the remotest noise or sound of somebody walking by.

Sifnos

Distances
The house is approximately 500m away from the main road, bus stop and parking area where two very well supplied super markets are strategically located. The house is reached on foot in 4-5 minutes from there following a paved pathway crossing the village. A smaller grocery shop is also on the way. The walking distance to the main village of Apollonia with shops, bars etc is 10 minutes downhill, although climbing back may be a bit difficult for elderly people. The swimming beaches are further away and are accessible by car in 15 minutes or by one of the buses that run frequently to and from the sea during the summer months. There are numerous old paths that set out from this area towards the hills or the sea for those who love trekking.
