Siena is renowned for its exceptional beauty and its museums and there can be no doubting why it has been declared by UNESCO to be a world heritage site. A vibrant city like this draws visitors from all corners of the world in search of fine arts, fine foods and fun in this lively town.

Key sights include the Siena Cathederal (Duomo), this is one of the best examples of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture and it is stunning. Works commenced on the cathedral in the 12th century and it was intended as the largest cathedral in the world. We would highly recommend a visit to the cathedral in order to view the incredible façade and also the magnificent interior. The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (the Cathedral's museum) is home to Duccio's masterpiece Maesta as well as other works from some of the city's most celebrated artists.

Another key attraction for tourists is the Piazza del Campo. This oval-shaped plaza in the heart of the town used to be home to many of the town's violent games such as bull fighting, jousting or general brawling. Nowadays the Piazza del Campo is home to the Palio horse race – a traditional medieval horse race ran on the 2nd of July and the 16th of August. During the Palio, the traditional 17 Contrada or districts of Siena compete by racing around the Piazza del Campo in a high-adrenalin and unpredictable contest. Large numbers of spectators surround the race and people hang out of the many windows around the Piazza.

Also in the Piazza del Campo is the town hall, the Palazzo Pubblico, a building which is characterised by its Italian medieval architecture with gothic influences. The tower of the Palazzo Pubblico was designed and built to be the tallest in Italy between 1325 and 1344. A fantastic view over the town is the reward for those visitors willing to climb the numerous stairs to the top of the tower.

Within the Palazzo Publico visitors can also visit the art museum that is home to some incredible murals (Frescos) by Italian artists such as Ambrogio and his brother Pietro Lorenzetti that preceded the art of the Renaissance.

There is no better way to spend time in Tuscany than to spend it eating and drinking. With a fantastic range of restaurants to choose from and vineyards to visit, travellers to this part of Italy can be sure of some truly inspirational gastronomic experiences. In the 2012 Michelin guide, 26 restaurants were listed in Tuscany with one star or more. The most highly awarded of the restaurants is the Enoteca Pinchiorri, a 3-star restaurant in Florence run by Giorgio Pinchiorri and Annie Feolde. In the region of Siena there are a total of 5 Michelin-starred restaurants. The most celebrated of the those restaurants is Arnolfo, a 2-Michelin starred restaurant run by brothers Gaetano and Giovanni Trovato in the town Colle di Val D'Elsa.

Humorously referred to as Chiantishire, this part of Italy is a necessary port of call for wine lovers. Vineyards thrive in Tuscany and the famous wine Chianti (produced from at least 80% Sangiovese grapes) is produced in abundance. A day or two spent touring some of the fantastic vineyards is time very well spent.
