The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region
Sidé is located at the south-western coast of Turkey and 65 km (approx 50 minutes) away from the International Airport of Antalya which is currently the biggest charter airport of Turkey and open all year round. It is one of the most popular resorts of Turkey, surrounded by two excellent beaches where numerous luxury hotels are situated. The antique town centre and the amphitheatre will take you back to the most exciting era of the Romans.
The ancient Roman walled city of Sidé stands on a peninsular flanked by glorious beaches of golden sand. It was the one time trysting place of Antony and Cleopatra and the ruins of the ancient Hellenistic port survive today. The grandeur of ancient Sidé's historic remains are well preserved. The city walls have a number of towers still intact and the 20.000 seat amphitheatre, supported by arched vaults then built in to a hillside, is a magnificent sight. The ancient Roman ruins date back to 200AD and you can take a few minutes or several hours to explore them, dependant on your time and interest.
Sidé's beautiful sandy beaches gently shelve into the warm, clear sea. During the summer months the sea reaches almost 70 degrees. To the west of the peninsular the beach stretches for about 10 km and to the east, the sands are less crowded and stretch all the way to the 5 star resorts of Sorgun. Watersports are abound in high season including para sailing , wind surfing and jet skiing and the further from the town you go the quieter the beach becomes.
There's no shortage of places to shop, eat and drink. Colourful shops friendly bars and wide choices of restaurants are located in the colonnaded main streets and narrow alleyways of the resort centre. The bazaar is open 7 days a week in normal season until very late at night and consists of almost 3,500 shops, selling everything from a bottle of water to exclusive gifts and carpets. Be prepared to barter – the Turkish love it.
The harbour has an abundance of restaurants catering for every possible taste. For a romantic evening, sample some excellent swordfish in one of the superb waterfront restaurants. Nightlife can be as lively and energetic as you choose with variety of bars and even a couple of nightclubs!
Inland from Sidé is the bustling town of Manavgat, where you can take a leisurely boat trip along the river to the Manavgat waterfalls.
