Location description from owner

The Dalmatia region

With over 50,000 inhabitants, Sibenik has grown at a remarkable rate not just in terms of the growth rate on the Dalmatian Coast. The houses are grouped around the 2.5 km long estuary that forms a natural harbor and also is next to the city center.

The sheltered location pulls in boaters who flock here on holiday happy to drop anchor. It was previously suggested that this would be an ideal base for a conquest. The importance of the city as a representative center for the Sibenik-Knin County is also evident in that Sibenik was the world's first city that was illuminated by electric light. This is especially due to the engineer Nikola Tesla and thanks to his inventions, the film "Coffee and Cigarettes" delivered a tribute.

Sibenik is a historic city, which played a big role in the development and spread of the early Croatian state and is rich in cultural and historical monuments. The best known is undoubtedly the famous Cathedral of Sibenik, one of the original buildings of the late Middle Ages, which is primarily associated with the local master Juraj Dalmatinac Matejev.

Today Sibenik is a tourist center in the area where the best-indented archipelago in Europe (Kornati) and karst hydrographical phenomena in the hinterland (buk Skradinski, Visovac, Roski) is located and is an ecologically attractive tourist destination on the Adriatic coast, where nature lovers, art lovers, active holidaymakers and those who might just want rest and relaxation only fully come into their own.

Sibenik

The nearest airport is in Split and every twenty minutes pendle buses connect the airport with Sibenik. Whoever is afraid of flying, or would like to take his own car on holiday, will be pleased with the wide reach of the motorway network in Dalmatia.

As one of the youngest in Europe, it is also one of the most comfortable: a variety of diners lining the A1 is an obvious sign of its development.

Only the ongoing construction could lessen the holiday anticipation a little during a traffic jam - but during the high season, this nuisance is kept as low as possible. Simply follow the road and go towards where "Sibenik" is located. After passing Munich, there are still about 850km ahead of you. If you would rather travel by another form of transport, you could take a direct train from Zagreb. You can also take the daily ferry from Rijeka. Furthermore, the two airports in Split and Zadar allow easy travel, and are both only 45 kms away.

The restaurants offer domestic specialties (lamb, grilled dishes, cooked under a baking lid - especially turkey). In Dolac, near the shore below the fort Anne, there are about a hundred cafés and bars.

Among the cultural events the highlights are: the International Children's Festival (last week of July and first week of August), the Organ Summer School (second half of August) and the summer of Sibenik. The feast of St. James, the patron saint of the city, is celebrated with great solemnity.

Recreational athletes, many sports facilities are available at the Jadrija beach such as the several beach volleyball courts. The waters off Sibenik offer good opportunities for sailing and rowing, and there are several diving clubs that offer courses.

Especially rewarding are underwater photographic safaris. The Dubrava Hawking Centre organizes falconry courses. The courses are taught by experts, and advanced small game hunters (hare, pheasant, etc.) can take part. In Jadrtovac there is a riding school.
