Location description from owner

The England region

Everybody knows South Devon but North Devon is lesser known less crowded and has much better beaches with real yellow sand. The beaches are great for families and surfers alike and several of our beaches have been awarded Blue Flags.
The stunning beaches of North Devon and its world renowned reputation for wildlife, nature and beauty set a most amazing backdrop for the coastal towns and countryside villages that make up the area that is Devon.

Historic Barnstable dates back 1000 years and is a hub for great retail therapy. For nature lovers, see the puffins on Lundy Island or visit the Exmoor National Park to discover the most stunning views. The harbour, beaches and attractions in Ilfracombe have been attracting holiday makers in their droves since the Victorian era. There are so many places to visit in Devon - make sure you don't miss any.

Shirwell

With so much to see and do in North Devon, you will be spoilt for choice. Discover fun filled days that will keep you and your little ones entertained and fascinated for hours on end. Whatever the weather there is an attraction or activity to suit, and plenty of retail therapy in our market towns. Whether you want to explore the coast or enjoy the best local food and drink North Devon has to offer, your journey starts here.

Barnstaple is the oldest borough in the country and is the commercial and agricultural centre of North Devon. A must visit for anyone seeking serious retail therapy. Saxons first settled in Barnstaple (Barum) over 1000 years ago; In 930 AD it was a Saxon stronghold serving as a market for the surrounding countryside.

Today it has a wonderful mixture of Victorian, Medieval and Georgian architecture and is proud to be a multiple winner of Britain in Bloom. Visit the Barnstaple Heritage Centre, sited in a fine Grade 1 listed building to learn more about the town's 1000 year history.

“Expensive for this type of property”

Reviewed 15 Sep 2014

Nice basic accommodation, clean and equipped with all that was needed. Swimming pool lovely as was the hot tub, but thought it disappointing that you had to pay to use the sauna and likewise if you wanted bubbles in the hot tub. Found that everything outside the cottage cost extra which, having paid over £500 for the week was rather money grabbing. Would not say it was excellent value for money and would look around for better deals in future.

Thank you for the review and rating and we are pleased you enjoyed the facilities at North Hill. I am sorry you felt that you should not be charged for using the Sauna (£1 for 20 mins coin operated) and the hot tub. The hot tub can be used without cost. We feel these small additional costs are justified where there is a heavy use of electricity or heavy wear and tear on a pool table for example. We believe our cottages are keenly priced and the cost for Ivy Cottage in this case was £435 for the first week in September. The price was pushed up over £500 because the guests in this case chose to book through a third party who charge a commission, and they bought two dogs which are charged at £25 each. This charge for dogs is fairly standard and many cottages would not take 2 dogs.
