Location description from owner

The East Anglia region

Suffolk was once one of the richest parts of the country, due to the regions' economic boom as a wool trading centre - well into the 16th century. This legacy has left the county with its magnificently endowed 'wool' churches, many built to support much larger populations than live here now.The county's landscape is serenely beautiful, the border with Essex is the Stour Valley, made famous by the painters Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable. Constable enthused about the county's 'gentle declivities, its luxuriant meadow flats sprinkled with flocks and herds, its well cultivated uplands, its woods and rivers, with numerous scattered villages and churches, farms and picturesque cottages'.

Shimpling

Bury St Edmunds is the most attractive large town in Suffolk. It is situated on the rivers Lask and Linnet amid gently rolling farmland. The town is Georgian in flavour, with street upon street of handsome, 18th century facades. Busy market days are Wednesday and Saturday and Greene King, the famous Suffolk brewer is based here. Bury is a convenient place from which to explore west Suffolk. The ruined abbey is set in a beautiful garden and guided tours of the brewery are recommended. The Village of Shimpling is an old Suffolk village with a mixture of old thatched cottages and some more recent development. The village church was the setting for the marriage of Claudia Schiffer in May 2002 to Matthew Vaughn.
