The East Anglia region
The seaside town of Sheringham lies on the North Norfolk coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a landscape of saltmarsh, shingle and wide, empty beaches, and a haven for wildlife- avocets, egrets, rare terns and the grey seal colony at Blakeney Point.
Within a few miles are the lovely Georgian town of Holt, with its galleries and cafe culture, the Victorian resort of Cromer and the picturesque coastal villages of Weybourne, Blakeney and Cley, with their flint cottages and windmills. Norfolk's stately homes, Blickling, Felbrigg, Holkham Hall, Houghton Hall and Sandringham, offer fascinating days out.
The North Norfolk coast path runs for 50 miles across a hauntingly beautiful coastal landscape and can be walked in small sections, using the excellent Coasthopper bus.
Slightly further afield are the medieval city of Norwich and the waterways of the Norfolk Broads.
For centuries a remote fishing station, Sheringham grew into an Edwardian seaside resort following the arrival of the railway in 1887. The fishermen's quarter, with its quaint alleyways and flint cottages, remains at the heart of the town.
Sheringham today is a small, gently old-fashioned seaside town, set against a backdrop of rolling woodland, good walking and cycling country. The High Street runs down to the sea and offers independent shops, tearooms, pubs, Nepalese, Thai, Austrian and traditional restaurants, and of course fresh local crab and lobster or fish and chips, best enjoyed perched on the seawall! Attractions include the Blue Flag beach, a fine coastal golf course, museums celebrating the town's seafaring heritage, a swimming pool and leisure centre, and the Poppy Line steam railway. All these are within easy walking distance of Magnolia Cottage, as is the North Norfolk coast path.
Sheringham's seafront promenade runs offers a lovely stroll, especially at sunset- watching the sun sink into the sea (yes, even on the East coast!) is quite magical.
Behind the town, sea views can be enjoyed from Sheringham Park, designed in the 18th century by Humphrey Repton and now owned by the National Trust.
Throughout the summer Sheringham is alive with festivals- the Crab and Lobster festival, Lobster Potties folk dance festival, carnival week and the famous 40s weekend.
Excellent transport links include the Coasthopper bus and Bittern Line train to Norwich.
