Villa / 4 bedrooms / sleeps 10
The house is situated on a 2 acre plot, fronting a white coral sand beach, surrounded by coconut palms, frangipani trees and bougainvillea. It is about 2 miles south of Mombasa Island, on the Kenya coast, about 45 minutes drive from the airport. The beach is peaceful – there are no big hotels nearby and therefore no beach boys. There is a lovely swimming pool with a big shallow end for children to play in safely.
The house has 4 large air conditioned bedrooms, each with its en-suite bathroom and solar heated water. Each has a balcony, either facing east toward the sea and the sunrise or inland and west to the sunset. The main balcony facing the sea has a big table with chairs and is a place for the family to eat breakfast or relax with a drink in the evening. The house sleeps 9/10. The 2 bedrooms facing the sea each have a big double bed and the other bedrooms are a twin and a triple, with single beds. There is also a spare bed in the study downstairs (toilet near, but no en suite bathroom), so the house can accomodate 10 people.
The dining room has a large dining table and the lounge area is comfortably furnished with a settee and easy chairs. There is WIFI, a TV and DVD player and a variety of board games. The kitchen is large and fully equipped.

Local Amenities and Staff
The area is peaceful and not built up with hotels or restaurants. However, there are lots of good beach side and other restaurants and bars about 30 minutes drive down the coast at Diani.
There are good supermarkets just across the ferry on Mombasa Island and at Diani. The staff will buy local fresh fish, fresh fruit and vegetables for you and will also do the supermarket shopping for you, if you prefer.
Massage: an experienced masseuse, Helen, comes in by appointment and offers a range of massages, facials, manicures, pedicures etc.
There is an Estate Manager, Sue, who lives just down the beach. She will arrange anything for you : – from Safaris to Tsavo Game Park or dolphin trips at Wasini Island, to taxis, car hire, reef walks and shopping. She will check regularly with you during the day to see if there is anything you need. She will do her best to see that your every need is met. Edwin, the caretaker is permanently on site to help you.
A maid, Norah comes in each day between 7.30 and 5.00 pm. She cleans the house, does the washing up, services the bedrooms, washes guest's clothes and towels etc.
There is also a night watchman, Hamisi, who generally makes sure that all is safe. We are also connected to G4S for additional security.

Pool, Garden and Beach
The house is situated on a 2 acre plot, with the white coral sand beach in front. The garden has coconut palms, from which you can have fresh “madafu” (Kiswahili for green coconut) to drink, mango trees, frangipani trees and masses of bougainvillea.
The pool has a large shallow end for children to play and for adults to relax, together with a deep end that is deep enough to dive in. The water is smooth and does not smell of chlorine. There is a wide sandstone surround to the pool, with sun loungers you can sunbathe and relax on and a table with an umbrella shade and chairs to sit at or have meals.
The beach is white coral sand, and you can swim in its warm waters when the tide is in. There is a wide fringing reef about 1km offshore, which provides a barrier that makes swimming completely safe from strong currents and sharks.
The Coast Province region
The house is about 4 degrees south of the equator at sea level, so the climate is always warm, but without extremes, due to the proximity of the sea and the breeze from it. It can be quite hot in the daytime (32 degrees) and can drop down to about 25 at night.
The coast has historic links with Arab traders and colonists, for over 1000 years, especially from Oman. In the 16th century they struggled for control of the coast with the Portuguese. Mombasa's Fort Jesus is one relic of this struggle.
Shelley Beach is a quiet beach area, with no big hotels, and therefore no beach boys. At low tide, you can walk / wade out to the main fringing reef, spotting (and dodging) a wide range of sea creatures on the way, particularly at night.
There area wide range of wading birds on the low tide area - storks, herons, egrets and ibis mainly, that let you get quite close to them. There are spectacular lilac breasted rollers in the garden and pied kingfishers working the sea at high tide.
It is a wonderful place for the interested naturalist!

I have just returned from a fantastic stay at this villa. The location is perfect. We swam in the sea and at low tide we were able to wander out to the reef through the rock pools. We also enjoyed some lovely walks along the beach where the local people were welcoming and friendly. The villa itself is really tasteful and stylish. The staff were always helpful. Omar, the night –security man, was smiling and friendly. Norah made sure everything was spotlessly clean and tidy – and she set our beds each night so that mosquito nets were properly in place. Fatih is very well connected and accompanied us on a fantastic two day safari, which included a journey miles away from other visitors where we had great up-close experiences of crocodiles and hippos. This villa is perfect if you are looking for an elegant, peaceful and secure base from which to embrace the African experience. The garden and swimming pool are wonderful for chilling out and the position right on the beach offers wonderful views as the tide ebbs and flows. We are already planning our next visit.
