The Isle of Wight region
The Isle of Wight is well known for its mild climate and amazing views. The Island has some of the countries most beautiful walks and attracts walkers from around the globe.
There is always such a lot to do on the Island and even when it rains it will not spoil your holiday, there are plenty of indoor places of interest.
Situated on the east side of the Island, Shanklin village is well know for its thatch cottages and old charm.
There is so much to see and do in the area. Here are a few suggestions :
Shanklin Chine : Chine is a Saxon word meaning deep, narrow ravine formed by water cutting through sandstone and leading to the sea. The Shanklin Chine has been formed over the last 10,000 years and covers an area of approximately three acres. This makes a fantastic walk where you can see wildlife, plentiful plants & woodland and an amazing waterfall. The Chine interests all ages with everything from geology to smuggling. For further information please visit www.shanklinchine.co.uk
Rylstone Gardens : These have been called the most picturesque in the South of England and so are well worth the visit. You can relax at the Cafe or try your hand at crazy golf. There are also regular open air concerts held in the gardens. The gardens run alongside the Chine.
Shanklin Theatre : Almost all of the shows and workshops put on here are compiled and written in house by the resident creative team. The Theatre is open throughout the year with various shows appealing to all ages. Visit http://www.iwight.com/shanklintheatre for further details.
Shanklin Beach : This area is famous for its sandy beaches and safe areas for bathing. The beach has its own lifeguards and during the peak season it is cleaned every day. Shanklin is popular for watersports of all kinds so you can either go along and have a go or sit back, relax and watch!
Esplanade Golf : There is a 18 hole Crazy Golf Course and 18 hole putting green to be found at the eastern end of the Shanklin Esplanade.
Shanklin Old Village : This area of Shanklin has some of the oldest dwellings on the Isle of Wight and most of them are thatched and so very picturesque. There are plenty of small gift shops and tea rooms.
There are plenty of lovely pubs & restaurants to eat at in Shanklin. You will be spoilt for choice!
