Description from owner

Description

I like to make beautiful spaces. There is not one specific way for something to be beautiful. When I first got this place, I felt like it was already a beauty, but it was covered up pretending to be something it was not. For many years, people who were here did not respect what it was. So I began to do what I felt the house asked for, which was not to try to be something it is not, but to accept what it is. And what it is is a 500-year-old house that is proud and comfortable with itself. "I am old and I don’t want to change or try to be something I am not. Don’t make me new. Make me real,” the house said to me. So a relationship began. “What do you want?” I would ask, and it told. Sometimes we would fight. Sometimes we laughed. Sometimes it seemed like we would never get along. But we never quit, and we bonded and became friends.

Bedroom 1: I created this room with decorative elements I collected and made from pieces around the house. The archway over the bed is made with tiles I salvaged from floors and walls — some 100 years old. All the wooden elements I made by hand — the doors above the bed, the blue window panes and their enclosures, the base that the bed rests on. These were made with spare boards laying about that I put together like puzzle pieces. The room is filled with little surprises — tabletops that pull out from the side of the bed like nightstands, cubby holes and giant under-the-bed drawers that I created to perfectly fit any size of suitcase, a nook in the wall for candles and herb-infused water, a Moroccan light that fills the room with a kaleidoscope of color at night.

Bedroom 2: I wanted this room to feel luxurious, like a romantic getaway with beautiful details. The sleeping area is tucked away behind a wall of white curtains that you can close to create the feel of even more privacy. You enter the bed by stepping onto a tiered mosaic platform, which I created with bits of broken tiles that I kept as I remade the house. The bed, when you lie down, you sink into a cushion of pillows — some goose down, some memory foam. The windows I made by hand, and when you open them, you look down into the courtyard garden and hear the birds chirping. The window seat doubles as a chest, where you can store your luggage, and a closet has been cut into the thick, 500-year-old stone walls — all created by hand.

Bedroom 3: This is the only room that looks out onto the narrow cobblestone paths of Santa Cruz. Open just the windows for a little sunlight, or the full french doors for Sevilla’s famous orange-blossom-scented breezes, then lie in bed and look out onto the balcony and the historical street below. The beds hang from the stone walls, each on a platform big enough for keeping a book or a glass of water by your side. You reach the top bunk from a ladder I made from spare scraps of wood I had left from the reconstruction. The floor is finished with an outline of tiles taken from another area of the house. There is room under the bed for storing luggage and a desk for your convenience.

Bedroom 4: This 3rd floor studio is entirely private, just for you, and does not have to be shared with anyone if you want extra privacy or it can function as just another bedroom. You walk through the courtyard and up the stairs to arrive at a door that only you have the key to. You have your own space with bedroom, bathroom, and kitchenette consisting of a small fridge, microwave, and single burner stove. You have basic pots and pans for making small quick meals, as well as plates, cups, utensils, and a coffee maker. Everything you see here has been handmade, from the cooking area, to the table and stools, to the hanging bed, and even the windows

The house is three stories of 500-year old Spanish history and is open air in all the common areas. Sit in the courtyard garden and enjoy your tea or coffee while listening to the trickle of the fountain. Relax in a shady nook and read a book or write a postcard. Enjoy a restful bath with candles and bath salts after a long day exploring the town. Cook a meal in the rustic style, well-equipped kitchen. Take in the beautiful sunshine and orange-blossom-scented air of Sevilla on the rooftop terrace. The whole house is yours to explore and enjoy.
