Enjoy swimming in the lake, just a few minutes' drive from the village, and safe rivers nearby. Mediterranean beaches such as Leucate can be reached in an hour. There are gentle as well as more adventurous walks right from your door, through vineyards and the garrigue - the aromatic lavender and rosemary brush of the hills. Unforgettable Cathar castles such as Termes and Peyrepeteuse, the medieval centre of Lagrasse with its famous Benedictine abbey, the Canal du Midi, and Carcassonne are all nearby. Taste fine local cheeses, honey and wine from the farms and vineyards and explore great food markets.

The area is equally delightful in the spring, when rare wild orchids appear, and in the autumn, when the vineyards are turning red and gold.

Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

The Aude is famous for Carcassonne's Cité - a World Heritage Site, and the largest fortified city in Europe - the seventeenth-century Canal du Midi (also a World Heritage Site) and unforgettable Cathar castles. The house is just twenty minutes from the medieval centre of Lagrasse, famous for its Benedictine abbey and the beauty of its historic streets and setting. Yet much of the magic is in the landscape on your doorstep, in the rocky hills and aromatic brush of the garrigue, in oak and chestnut forests, and in obscure old stone villages.

Many towns have great markets and restaurants, and there's a wealth of fine local honey, cheese, wine, and other produce to sample. The house is just over an hour from the Mediterranean - via a relaxing backroads route - or swim in the lake just five minutes from the village, as well as in nearby rivers. The lanes through the fields provide safe family cycling; horse-riding is offered locally, and canoeing not far away on the upper Aude River. In winter, lower altitude snowfields such as those around Camurac are accessible on a day trip.

Servies-en-Val

The house is located in Taurize, an elevated village set among vineyards and hills. The village is visited by a mobile boulangerie every morning - a van which stops beside the house, from which you can buy croissants, baguettes, etc. There is a grocery, butcher and restaurant in the closest neighbouring village, of Servies, just a kilometre away; and many other shops, art galleries, restaurants and bars in Lagrasse, approximately 20 minutes' drive.

A variety of walks, ranging from the most gentle to more adventurous, can be undertaken directly from the house. We are close also to several magnificent sections of the GR36, one of the France's most famous long-distance walking routes, and not far from the Sentier Cathare, which links several of the renowned chateaux.

In July and August many of the villages have their fetes, with music, dining and dancing in the village squares. There is a thriving musical culture in the area - with pop and dance music in the streets, and many classical and choral concerts in local churches and abbeys.
