The Gambia is known as the "smiling coast". Its miles of golden sand on its Atlantic Coast and hospitable people make it a relaxing place for a sunshine holiday. It is also a birdwatcher's paradise - The Gambia has more bird life per acre than any other country. Bijilo forest near the coast offers easy birdwatching opportunities. Alternatively you can take an adventure up-country away from the tourist trails. We can help you arrange a visit.

The Gambia vibrates with local atmosphere. Ladies wearing swathes of fabric dyed in bright primary colours walk along the roadside balancing heavy containers of water on their heads. Boys sit next to wheelbarrows of oranges carefully removing the peel in strips, fishermen haul their catches up the beach and craftsmen deftly weave bamboo into baskets, shapes forming while you watch. Delicious seasonal produce is available from the fruit and vegetable markets and roadside stalls and freshly-squeezed juice is sold on the beach for the equivalent of 50 pence. A range of restaurants offer local and international cuisine to suit all tastes and budgets and those who like shopping can browse through drums, pictures, leather shoes, necklaces, clothes and basketware. You might even chose to take home a kora, the Gambian stringed instrument.

High season is between October and May when the days are hot and nights are pleasant. A bonus when travelling from the UK is that the flight is only five hours and The Gambia lies in the same time zone.

Escaping to The Gambia to enjoy winter sun, delicious fresh food and a relaxed atmosphere is highly recommended.

Beach

Most people come to The Gambia to enjoy the sun, sea and sand. The beach by the Senegambia hotel is only about a one kilometre walk from Leander

One of our favourite places to relax on the beach is at Ley Bato, a guesthouse and restaurant where you are welcome to spend the day. It's a secluded area of beach with soft sand and very comfortable hammocks. We can recommend the juice sold on the beach and an excellent basket maker works nearby.

Wildlife

If you want to see some wildlife there are some interesting excursions within a short distance of Mango Trees. Abdu Rahman is always a good and reliable guide.

Bijilo Forest Park - next to the Kololi Beach Club hotel. This is a very pleasant place for a walk under huge trees full of birds and monkeys.

Kachikally Crocodile Pool - tucked inside the fascinating backstreets of Baku. The pool is considered sacred by the locals, its waters allegedly having healing properties. Huge crocodiles doze around it, some of which you can touch under supervision if interested - we were assured they'd had breakfast and lunch so weren't hungry!

River Adventures

Lamin Lodge - a day trip involving a river trip on a dug out canoe through the mangrove swamps and lunch at the lodge.

The Gambia is a thin country following the banks of the River Gambia. We can help arrange fascinating adventures up-country away from the tourist trail for those who wish to explore beyond the beach.

Serekunda

LOCAL TRAVEL For local travel we recommend Abdu Rahman who has worked with the owners and staff of Mango Trees for fifteen years. Abdu speaks excellent English and is a knowledgeable, reliable guide as well as taxi driver. Abdu has two vehicles, an estate car licensed for four passengers and a people carrier licensed for eight passengers. Airport transfers can be pre-booked and Abdu will greet you at the airport. Abdu has a wide knowledge of Gambian birds and is a great guide for a trip to Bijilo Forest, Lamin Lodge or for longer adventures up-country. He is also a very sensitive and helpful shopping guide should you wish to venture into the main bazaar in Banjul. He is also available to take you to bars and restaurants in the evenings and his venue recommendations can be very helpful.Getting to the Gambia from the UK is very easy, with direct flights from London Gatwick and Manchester using charter carriers such as Monach and FirstChoice.

“Fantastic villa. Close to beaches and facilities. Relaxing environment.”

Reviewed 21 May 2015

Leander house is a great place to relax, enjoy the Gambia sunshine and cool off in the beautiful pool. The house is big enough to accommodate a large family and is on one level which makes life easier with children. Location is great and the beaches, hotels, bars and restaurants are only a short (dusty) walk away. The villa is clean and well equipped and this makes for a very comfortable stay. Local transport can be arranged by the owners which makes getting about stress-free.
