The Andalucia region
Serón is situated in the province of Andalucía in a very beautiful part of Spain. It is a medieval village with a castle at the top built in the time of the Moors. The area is seeped in history, many of the ramblas having been old Roman trading routes. Serón is on the border of Almeria and Granada, close to the Roman city of Baza and surrounded by mountains. Seron is widely acclaimed for its Jamon (spanish parma ham) and the area offers excellent local produce very cheaply.
Serón is situated on the northern slope of the Filabres Mountain Range in the Almanzora Valley. It is approx. 127 kms from the capital of Almeria and is at an altitude of 822m above sea level. The houses of this lovely Spanish town are built on the hillsides, with fabulous views over the the valley.
We are lucky to have a unique micro climate in this area with very little rainfall yet the whole area is massed with beautiful green pines, Olive & Almond trees as well many grape vines.
There are many things to do whilst staying here:
At the nearby natural thermal spring - the Balsa de Céla you can enjoy swimming in the thermal pool which is surrounded by bars & restaurants. There is another hot spring within walking distance of Shambala, tucked away in a peaceful haven. Other activies include biking & walking trails, rock climbing & abseiling, as well as off-road driving in one of the many ramblas (dry river beds). Serón is ideally located for day trips to the Sierra Nevada ski resort & The Alhambra Palace in Granada. The beautiful beaches of Mojacar, Vera & Garrucha are also with an hours drive. Whilst in that area you can also visit the fantastic Natural Park of Gabo de Gata nr Nijas with some of the finest beaches in the area. There are also golf courses and horse riding within an hours drive., Mini Hollywood offers fun for all the family with a zoo, swimming pool, themed plays from western films and much more. In Sorbas the crystal caves give you the opportunity under a guide to explore these fantastic caves, with 4 different routes to chose from. There are two water parks with flume rides, one in Vera and the other nr. Granada.
There are many local markets offering home produce, clothes and food. Whilst visiting the one in Baza make a day of it and continue for another 20mins and visit the famous Negratin Bolsa. The colours of this blue green lake need to be seen to be believed. There is a choice of two restaurants on the lake. One offering small boats during the summer season. There are many types of fish in the lake and it is safe to swim in.
There are many festivals throughout the year. The Moros & Cristianos takes place in Cullar at the end of April and in Mojacar in July. An amazing parade re-enacting the battle between the Moors and Christians all those years ago. Serón celebrates the Jamón festival during the last weekend in July, but there are many other fiesta's around the area throughout the year.
The area around Serón is beautiful and will leave you feeling as if you have traveled back in time with few cars on the road, the occasional donkey carrying its load, goat herders with their goats and peace, . Agriculture and mining have provided the wealth for this prosperous village from the time of the Phoenicians through to the Greeks, Romans and Moors; it flourished particularly during the Middle Ages. Las Menas over the next year is to be re-opened once more mining Iron Ore and shipping it down to Almería. In the old days this was done by train although these days will probably be made by road. By exploring the local countryside you will be amazed at the picturesque whitewashed villages, the winding country lanes that take you up and over mountains with panoramic views and the warmth and hospitality that the local people give you. One of these routes is to La Jordana, in the national park high up near Las Menas, it is a wonderful place to sit with your picnic, explore the Sierra de Filabres with it's pine forests and deep valleys and see such an assortment of wild birds.
All the local bars here offer free tapas with your drinkswhich is unique to Andalúcia.
