“Just as previous reviewers have said... "A room with a view"”

Reviewed 9 Aug 2017

If you like "getting away from it all" holidays, whilst still being close enough to civilisation, to go out for meals etc in the evening then Casa Gardo won't disappoint. Situated very much at the top of the mountain the location, views, and tranquillity are just superb. Having said that getting to the villa is not for the faint hearted, and if you not happy driving up often single track dirt track roads then maybe this isn't for you. But if you do enjoy driving whatever the conditions then you will not be disappointed when you arrive. To be honest the roads are not that scary after you have driven them a few times and I actually found it easier to drive them in the dark than the daylight. The villa itself is all on one floor with two good sized bedroom and a shared bathroom. The kitchen is well equipped and the TV/lounge area very comfortable. Outside there is a good sized pool and a range of sunbeds/chairs. Overall the villa was very clean. Rita and Charlie are the perfect hosts. They met us in Sayalonga and we followed them up the mountain track to the villa. They provided a very nice welcome pack and made sure that we were completely happy with everything about the villa before they left us to it. We saw them a couple of times during our stay, but they were always at the end of the phone should we have needed them. TOP TIPS: If you hire a car that's in the 1.0/1.3 litre engine bracket then chances are it will struggle with the roads, not only to the villa but generally in the area. A 1.6 litre engine should cope much better. We had a 1.275 litre Fiesta and it was hard work. Do make time to go the Nerja caves... they really are worth the visit. Make sure however that you get there for the 10:00am opening. We did and got parked easily, found no ticket queues and went on the first guided tour. When we came back about 90 minutes later the car park was full, the ticket queue was about 200 yards long and so was the queue for the guided tours... be warned. Nerja city itself is a great place to go in the evenings. Great atmosphere and a good selection of restaurants and bars. Would we recommend Casa Gardo = Absolutely Would we revisit = normally we don't go back to the villas that we stay in, but this time we might make an exception.

“on top of the world!”

Reviewed 5 Apr 2017

we have just returned from villa gardo, and while it is not as swanky as some of her neighbours there is something more authentic about it. Inside it is spacious and presented to a high standard. It was clean and comfy with crisp bed linen and puffy pillow's! Rita and Charlie (property manager's) could not have been any more helpful if they tried! The view from the terrace was amazing, we felt we were on top of the world! The lane to the villa was a bit scary if you came across an oncoming car, due to it being quite narrow, but it is worth the view when you get there! Thanks again Rita and Charlie, hope to see you again!

“Absolutely fabulous”

Reviewed 17 Sep 2012

This property is absolutely fabulous. Tucked away on a mountain side overlooking the villages and the sea beyond, it was tranquil and a real 'get away from it all' holiday. Whilst there are neighbours you were not really aware of them and it was so peaceful. We spent most of our time on the large patio area under the umbrella and in the pool as it was very hot but wouldnt have wanted it any different! The pool was great fun and just right to dip in and out of morning, noon and night! The villa is nicely furnished as you would expect, fully equipped, plenty of towels and extra linen, and we always ate alfresco using the dining area which leads onto the patio. Fantastic to watch the evening lights twinkling below with a nice glass of chilled wine! Whilst the property does not have aircon, we found that the fans were adequate and allowed us to sleep at night. There is a good shopping centre not far away (about 10 km), and local shops just down the mountain in the village of Sayalonga (1km). The local beaches are also not far away, but you do need a car. Charlie and Rita, who look after the villa, were lovely and made sure the villa was as it should be and nothing was too much trouble, Thank you. We will definitely come back!

“Amazing location and breath taking views”

Reviewed 3 Oct 2011

The local area is fantastic - breath taking mountains, amazing sea views and the nearby towns of Sayalonga and Competa are beautiful Spanish / Moorish style towns with good restaurants and a few shops. Amentities such as larger supermarkets, the coast etc are literally at the foot of the mountain, just a short drive down a very steep winding road. The beaches were extensive, stretching for miles and empty. An excellent restaurant perched on the mountain top is walkable from the villa and the views over the mountains to the coast, with the gentle sound of bells from the goat and the herder on the hillside, drifting on the breeze was magical. I was surprised generally how reasonable meals out were in the area (circa E12) and local drinks were extremely cheap. (Circa E1.5 max for a beer or glass of wine) The local wine, also very cheap, was lovely, no rough plonk ! Lively and clubbing - not at all ! But lots of interesting places to visit, good food and wine all readily available. The villa itself has lovely outside space, the pool area and terrace looking out over the coast both having truly beautiful views. The binoculars in the villa were an excellent idea. The only downside is that the villa interior was a little tired - but immaculately clean. The waterproof sheets on the beds weren't nice in the heat and I would assert cotton protectors would be more appropriate. I suspect the house had experienced a leak on th rear wall and as such the twin room and several kitchen cupboards were so damp / stagnant smelling they were unusable. That said, the weather was lovely and the outside area spacious and lovely - so there was little cause to be inside ! The bathroom was newly refurbished and immaculate and the villa as a whole was very well equipped. The owner was helpful and the fridge full of essentials on arrival was most welcome. Sort out whatever was making that damp smell and this would be a perfect spot. If that were fixed, I'd go again.

Owner's reply: The problems mentioned in this review were due to a burst pipe and have now been rectified. The damaged units have been replaced and a new oven, gas hob and all worktops have been replaced.
