Sauze d'Oulx

With great scenery, fantastic skiing and a lively après ski, a Sauze D'Oulx skiing holiday offers great value all round. Located close to the French border, the resort has impressive views and looks across to the Valle di Susa.

Sauze d'Oulx is a mixture of old and new. In the town centre you will find charming narrow streets, full of boutiques selling everything from chic leather goods to fresh pasta. There are pizzerias and restaurants abound, serving delicious local food and catering for all tastes and budgets. There is no shortage of après ski and the resort's nightlife is lively, particularly at weekends.

Situated at one end of the 400km (250m) lift-linked Via Lattea (Milky Way), Sauze d’Oulx is one of the larger, more popular, resorts of the area. With access to over 400km of pistes there is excellent skiing available for all abilities.

Sauze provides mainly intermediate runs and is a red paradise. There is a mid resort located at just over 2000mt called Sportina. All the runs from here are tree lined whilst above Sportinia it opens up and provides the links to the rest of the Milky Way.

For advanced skiers there is easy connection to Sestriere and the black runs at the top of Mount Motta and Mount Sises, and the Olympic Kandahar Slalom and Kandahar Barchetta runs. Nearer to home their is some challenging skiing off the top of Fraiteve with much of the northern face left un pisted.

If you like to venture off the beaten track then Sauze offers some great off piste through the trees. As with most resorts the best off piste is locked away in the minds of locals however there are guides available to help you find the best runs.

Beginners are well catered for too as Sauze d’Oulx has excellent English-speaking ski and snowboard schools that will get you up and skiing or boarding in no time at all.

Sauze d’Oulx has a much better than average sunshine record and much above average skiing. The vast majority of the pistes in Sauze d’Oulx have artificial snow-making facilities which is true throughout the Milky Way.

When the day has finished the town offers as much or as little apres as you like. There are plenty of bars to choose from offering you everything from sophisticated cocktails and excellent local wines to pints of Guinness. This being Italy the standard of restaurants is high.

"A good place for 8 friends to stay"

This 2-storey house was great for 3 older couples and two singles staying for 12 days (well, the two singles had to share the 4th double bed which was a novel experience for them). One bedroom is on ground level if someone does not like stairs. You do need a car! There are several lovely walks around nearby and you really feel as if you are out in the countryside. The views are gorgeous. You feel quite privileged compared to those in apartments downtown. We found Sauze d'Oulx is a very good hub for access to a wide range of other scenic and historic places (despite the hairpin drive up from the valley floor). We were in town for a spread out 5-day sporting event and found the chalet had everything we needed: roomy kitchen with galley cooking facilities with big pans and serving dishes, dishwasher, clothes washer and drier, 3 fantastic bathrooms, huge dining table and plenty of space for everyone to chill out. The owners were very welcoming and accessible the whole 12 days. They sent us a sheet with shopping places and restaurants etc that proved enormously helpful. We all would love to go back to the Chalet again.

"Spacious and well equipped chalet."

We met the owner on arrival and received a warm welcome. The chalet is very well equipped and great for those who desire more space and the peace which comes with being a few km's outsde the village. I would both come back again, and recommend to friends.

"A roomy and very comfortable ski chalet with great views"

Great place to stay. Very modern with plenty of room. Bus stop to the slopes at the end of the drive - fantastic holiday and we hope to come back.

"Beautiful setting, large house, had a great New Year trip"

The chalet is quite isolated, and around 10 minutes drive from the nearest ski lifts in Sauze. It's a big place, ideal for hosting dinner parties, and groups of maybe up to 8. It's very warm, and has pretty much everything you might need (dishwasher, washing machine, TV, music centre, good array of cooking equipment). Good views outside, but it can get quite snowed in. The driveway was cleared by someone locally after a big snowfall, but as it is on an incline, you need snowchains to get up it unless you park the car at the beginning of the drive by the side of the road, which we did as we had a minibus. The owners were very helpful, showing us how everything worked and helping us out when we called when stuck in the snow... There is a bus which stops at the end of the driveway and takes you straight to the slopes, very handy. We had a great time overall.
