The Dordogne region

SURROUNDING AREA: Once outside Sarlat you are surrounded by some beautiful countryside and stunning views. Take a trip along the Dordogne river on a gabarres, or if you fancy a bit of exercise the canoes are worth a trip, bring a picnic and spend a day on the river. Explore the many caves and grottes in the area, and the cave paintings of Lascaux 2. See the sights from above by taking a balloon ride or a trip in a plane ! The rock formations of Les Eyzies are well worth a visit and the beautiful Chateaux/gardens of Les Milandes,( the home of Josephine Baker) Marqueyssac, Castelnaud,Fenlon and D'Eyrignac. Step back in time(100 years) and take a trip to Le Bournat, enjoy the fairground rides and workshops, visit the aquarium, or the new zoo reserve. Rocamadour about an hour away is well worth a visit, - a monkey park ,falconry, zoo, caves, fantastic views, and the pilgrim walking route, with beautiful churches. And for RELAXATION - the lakeside beach of Tamnies is ten minutes away from Sarlat.

Aquitaine/Dordogne

SARLAT : Sarlat dates back to around the 9th Century and some say before , but it was probably at the beginning of the 9th Century, with the founding of a Benedictine abbey that the real history of the city began. As time went on Sarlat evolved even coming under English rule for 10 years in 1360.! following repeated episodes of plague, famine & flooding and local uprising - Sarlat remained unchanged - indeed forgotten and slowly fell into dis-repair, totally unsuited to modern day living with narrow streets & lack of sanitation. But this handicap was to become an asset when the city was one of the first to benefit from the Malrux law of 4th August 1962. This law on protected areas quickly led to extensive renovation work. Today, this restoration work carries on an architectural heritage that remains the main treasure of Sarlat, indeed Sarlat is often used as a backdrop for Films such as Les Miserables and holds 'The Sarlat Film Festival' each November.

“I wanted to staye forever!!!!”

Reviewed 1 Apr 2015

I originally booked for 3 weeks but then extended to 5 ... and totally loved my stay in beautiful Le Grenier in the centre of lovely Sarlat. The apartment was just dreamy and had everything I needed. I cooked every day with the local treats I bought at the Wednesday and Saturday markets and enjoyed every pink sunset from that lovely window. Paula and Barry were excellent hosts, collecting me from the train station and carrying my bags up the stairs....even offering to do a little pre-arrival grocery shop! The kitchen was even stocked with a few essentials which was great! I totally enjoyed my stay and would recommend it to anyone. You'll love waking to the church bells and chit chatter of your feathery roof top friends. I'll definitely be back. Thanks Paula and Barry

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review... We are so glad that you had a great time and hope to see you again in the future... Best wishes, Paula, Barry & Reece

“Phantastic location”

Reviewed 21 May 2014

Locate in the the heart of the old town of Sarlat. The stairs are nothing to worry. Bed is good and everything you need is there. Paula and Barry very friendly and helpful. The by far best Restaurant we´ve been to in Sarlat is the Bistro de l`Octroi. Parking is also no problem. The famous market takes place just at doorsteps of the nice old house.

Thank you so much for your review. We are glad that you had a lovely time in Le Grenier and enjoyed Sarlat and the area. Best wishes, Paula & Barry

“Everything you could need for a perfect holiday in the Dordogne.”

Reviewed 17 Sep 2012

From the first email the owner made us feel very welcome. The booking was very straightforward and on our arrival we were guided to the property, helped with our luggage and welcomed with a bottle of the local red. Could you wish for a better start to a holiday? The property has everything you need, including built in fitness training! Don't be put off by the steps up to the apartment - we puffed up them at the beginning of the week (we are in our 60s!), but by the end we didn't even need to stop for breath half way. And they were the perfect work out given the local cuisine - appetising though it is! Le Grenier is perfect for a couple - compact, but at the same time light and airy. Even when the heat outside was up to 33°, inside it remained fairly cool. The decor is stylish and it contains every modern appliance you could wish for. It was spotlessly clean on our arrival and easy to keep that way during our one week stay. Sarlat is a beautiful town and although very touristy but, because we were slightly out of season, we were able to take advantage of all it had to offer whilst feeling like residents rather than day trippers. The choice of places to eat is mind boggling - there are some very nice upmarket restaurants but you can also get a very nice meal for half the price. Sarlat is also an excellent centre for visiting the local sights from prehistoric caves to fortified chateaux as well as exploring the beautiful countryside and rivers of the area. If you don't want to spend your holiday relaxing on a beach or beside a pool but would rather soak up some of the local atmosphere and sights, this could be the perfect holiday rental for you.

We are very hapy that you had such a wonderful time at Le Grenier and Sarlat, and thank you for your wonderful review.... hopefully we will see you again in the future on your next visit to the region.
