The Turkish Aegean Coast region

The Turquoise Coast, situated in South West Turkey is named after the beautiful colouring in the lakes, rivers and sea due to the limestone rock. This fascinating area is attractive to tourists because of a fabulous climate, spectacular scenery and its rich 2000 years of ancient history. The Lycian coast is one of the most varied and beautiful coastal areas in the Mediterranean. Almost everywhere you go you will encounter historical remains from Lycian times.

The Lycian coast is one of the most varied and beautiful coastal areas in the Mediterranean. Almost everywhere you go you will encounter historical remains from Lycian times.

This area of Turkey is also renowned for its luscious unspoilt landscape, where orange and pomegranate groves abound in the valleys and long sandy beaches stretch as far as the eye can see, framed by the beautiful, often snow-capped Taurus mountains. There are many areas of historical interest within striking distance such as the ancient cities of Ephesus, Patara and Caunos for example. For the more adventurous there are opportunities to go white water rafting, scuba diving, Jeep safari driving, quad biking and much, much more.

Sarigerme

Gardenia villa is approximately a 15 minute walk from the village or less than 5 minutes by car. The views are stunning however the road is steep in parts. The village has many shops, restaurants and bars. There are ATMs located at the end of the main street and also a taxi rank. There are tour operators in the village offering a wide variety of trips and excursions at very reasonable prices. There is also a regular bus service to Ortaca.

The beach has excellent facilities with reasonably priced sunbeds and parasols for hire, toilets and changing areas, a cafe, picnic areas and ample car parking. The beach has blue flag status and offers an array of water sports from pedalos to parasailing.

Sarigerme is the site of the ancient city of Physilis. This city is now buried under the shifting sand. As a result of tourism development carried out before excavations, and the construction of hotels in the region, the history of Physilis is to remain under the sands of Sarigerme. Sarigerme is the name given to the coast near the village of Osmaniye, 850 metres inland from the shore. The name Sarigerme is linked to the Sariçay stream that divides Osmaniye and the coast. The Sariçay was once used as the transportation route for timber that was brought from the forest to the sea. To prevent the timber from escaping into the sea the stream's outlet into the ocean was closed during times of timber transportation. Thus the name 'Germe' ,which means tightening or fencing .

Turkish people are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality. It is normal to be offered tea when browsing in the shops and markets and to be treated like an honoured guest when invited into local homes.

There is a market in Sarigerme on Wednesdays and is a great opportunity to mix with the locals and try the fantastic array of locally grown produce or just browse for gifts and souvenirs. There are also vans that come to the village daily with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Fethiye has the largest market in the region, which takes place on Tuesdays and is well worth a visit. Here the tourists can mingle with the locals as they sell everything from colourful handmade pottery, to aromatic herbs and spices. The separate fish market is open everyday. Here you can buy freshly caught fish and seafood which can then be prepared and cooked for you at one of the restaurants in the square. Fethiye harbour offers daily boat trips and a ferry service to the Greek island of Rhodes.

Gocek is an international yachting harbour and resort about 25 minutes drive from Sarigerme, offering vibrant night life with a selection of sophisticated bars and restaurants.

The bustling resort of Dalyan is well worth a visit with its ancient rock tombs and the nearby mud baths at Koyzegi Lake. Take a riverboat or drive through the pomegranate fields to idyllic Iztuzu Beach where you can see the nesting sites of the giant Loggerhead turtles which breed here between May and August.

“Gorgeous villa, fab pool, lovely location”

Reviewed 17 Aug 2015

Villa Gardenia is a large, spacious and modern villa in the lovely area of Sarigerme - 15 minutes from Dalaman airport. It was very easy to find, with Diane's helpful and informative directons. We were a little surprised to find that Villa Leon was immediately next door to us but throughout the duration of our 2 week holiday - the villa was unoccupied and therefore not an issue in anyway. The photos don't do the villa justice - with all rooms large and spacious, with the exception of the smaller bedroom which has 2 single beds and can be described as compact and bijou - but perfectly comfortable and certainly idea for kids. The king size bedroom upstairs is lovely, and the bed particularly comfortable - always a plus in my book! The large pool was fab, unlike some where I've stayed before, this once didn't overheat like some do so, when you really need to cool off from the searing heat, it does just that - not cold in anyway just absolutely lovely! The pool is a great size and about 5 and a half foot depth throughout with no shallow or deep end - ladder entry, no steps. The kitchen was extremely well equipped, fab large modern fridge, plenty big enough for all your holiday needs. Aircon works a treat throughout the property, but do keep the windows open/fly screens shut because every day from 12.30ish, a lovely breeze comes up and the having the windows open allows the breeze to filter through the villa. The large living room/dining room has 3 large patio doors (which we needed some help opening!) open out onto the large verandah - with table and chairs - perfect for lazy lunches and evening drinks! The garden is quite steep, broken down into 3 different levels with some nice planting all around, and a vege plot and fruit trees. Sadi, and his wife (sorry never caught her name but begins with N) look after the pool and the house if any issues, plus a mid stay clean and bed change which was great - also some lovely gifts while we were there of water melon and some other turkish delicacies - virtually no engish, and bar merhaba, we have no turkish but with lots of miming and google translate, it was all good! The villa is less than 1km from the lovely village of Sarigerme, but the villa is up a very steep hill so not for the faint hearted! Sarigerme stocks the usual turkish genuine fake shops, and all the shopkeepers were pretty chilled and no hard sell going on - just really nice people. Our preferred restaurant was the Sarigerme restaurant but we liked them all - look out for the lovely big dog outside the Paradise at the far end of the village - a real sweetie. There are a few small supermarkets, so plenty for all day to day needs - and it's a 10 minute drive to Dalaman town where there is a carrefour, migros and butchers. We weren't massively keen on Sarigerme beach, but think we probably should have persevered a bit - instead we discovered a road to Izutzu beach (download navmii for a superb offline sat nav) which took 20/25 minutes but the scenery was phenomenal and the beach just gorgeous (sunbeds for 4 = 20 TL). Also well worth getting to the same beach via the boat rips from Dalayan - we just drove to Dalayan and got a boat all to ourselves, This also included an opportunity to see the turtles, buy some barbecued blue crabs (they were gorgeous) as well as the journey to the beach, 150TL for 4, 2 adults, 2 kids (11 and 14) We hired a car with economy car rentals from Dalaman airport and we got a new car, in perfect nick which was a god send for us - very easy collection and drop off - highly recommended. All in all - a great holiday which comes highly recommended.

Thank you for your kind words and I am very pleased that you enjoyed your holiday. The villa next door is very rarely occupied and never through the high summer although they are the lovliest friendliest neighbours you could wish for. I was surprised you were not too keen on Sarigerme beach I personally love it. You will be more than welcome should you wish to return in the future. Thanks again.
