“Lovely location for exploring Ponta Delgada”

Reviewed 15 Mar 2015

I had the pleasure of staying in this 2 BR apartment from mid December to Mid February and found it to be the perfect location for exploring the city on foot with my little dog Sophie. I had the whole top floor of the house to myself and I used the smaller BR as an office with the wonderful bonus of having a sunny terrace right off of it. Thanks to a wonderfully dry 2 month stretch of weather I was able to have breakfast & linger over coffee out on the terrace almost every day, enjoying the decadent pastries from Pao do Rei, a wonderful bakery and café right down the street. On the opposite corner was a well stocked Mini Compras where I ended up doing most of my grocery shopping. The casa is on a lovely residential street with well maintained houses all with pretty little gardens in front. It is wide and well lit with views of the sea straight down the hill so it's easy to learn your way around and I always felt safe walking Sophie at night there. The University is just a few blocks away and once I found the back entrance to it I often walked through the campus on my way down town using their convenient ATM and enjoying the pretty linear gardens in the middle where many trees & shrubs are labeled. A few more blocks down from the University is Mercado Graca , a big covered outdoor Farmers Market for really fresh and colorful produce, perfect for a vegetarian like myself. I got hooked on the wonderful ananas, the little sweet Azorean pineapples grown in greenhouses on the island. I often picked them up at Frutaria Sao Miguel too in the historic district on one of the streets filled with shops on my way home from sight seeing. And early on in my stay Rosa told me that after peeling them, the skins could be used for making tea. Steeping the peels in hot water with honey did indeed make a delicious tea so I never wasted any part of the pineapples after that tip and I ended up visiting the pineapple plantations to see how they are grown and the pineapple gelato made there was delicious. Just a 10 minute walk up the hill got us to Parque Urbano, a large green space and relatively new city park with nice walking paths, a café at the entrance, newly planted trees, and several flat terraced areas that I used for doing Yoga outside. It was Sophie's favorite place for quick secret off leash runs (don't tell anyone since dogs are supposed to be on leash there) and the views of the city and sea below were pretty. I could go on about all the places I walked to from this apartment, like Teatro Micalense for some great cultural events, but the point is, that no matter what you plan to do in Ponta Delgada, this apartment is in a great location on one of the prettiest streets right outside of the historic center and right on the Minibus route that will get you anywhere in the city. Because I was there for an extended time I got to meet the owners and their son & daughter at various times (who lucky for me both speak English very well) and I could not have asked for a nicer family as my hosts. They checked in with me regularly to be sure I was enjoying my stay and to see if I needed anything which was so reassuring when you travel to another country alone and don't' speak the language yet. And yet they respected my privacy and let me feel like the place was my own. By the end of my stay I had grown fond of this family, was so comfortable living there, and my only regret was that I had to pack up and leave my little winter hideaway and return to snowy Salem. Rosa & Ferdinando, thank you for the flowers, pastries, delicious bread from Nordeste and all of your help along the way and for letting Sophie stay there. We loved it and hope to come back to stay next time we visit the Azores.
