The Umbria region

In Umbria, a region that has gained a name for being the green heart of Italy, tourism is growing because of the unfamiliar harmony between nature, antiquities, historic centres and culture. The quiet of the countryside, good provisions and an inimitable cuisine are the great draw. This region is less touristy than Tuscany and this is especially appreciated by many tourists. It forms an ideal starting point for enjoying the peace of the surrounding hilly and mountainous landscape and on the other hand making trips to beautifull towns like Todi, Orvieto, Narni, Spoleto, Perugia, Gubbio, Assisi. You can also easily visit – in day trips - famous towns and charming villages in the southern part of Tuscany such as Siena, Arezzo, San Giminiano, Pienza, Cortona, Sinalunga, etc. Many tourists visit also Rome from here, without staying in the city which is very hot in summer. It is possible to go by car (journey of 1h-1h30) or by train from the stations of Terni, Narni-Amelia, Orte & Orvieto.

There are numerous charming little villages – many of medieval origin - as Amelia, Labro, Spello, Norcia, Bevagna, Montefalco to visit. In many towns and villages you can taste local dishes or buy local wines and olive oil (generally of excellent quality).

We must not forget the mountains with some splendid woods, e.g. Terminillo (up to 2000 metres by car). In around 1 hour it is possible to reach the shimmering lakes of Bracciano, Vico, Piediluco, Bolsena and Trasimeno. The Mediterranean Sea (mostly sand beaches) situated between Tarquinia and Chiarone are 90-120 Kms away (around 1h20-1h40 driving). Near the city of Terni you can also visit the Marmore falls (165 meters, one of the highest of Europe), there is nearby also a rafting/canoeing/hydrospeed center.

Santa Restituta

Todi is centrally situated in Umbria. So it is also suitable for visits in all directions to old towns and villages, beautiful monuments, mountains, the lake of Trasimeno, the mountains in the easterly direction, and the neighbouring region of Marche including one of the most impressive stalactite caves in Italy. To the north in a half-hour drive you are in Perugia or Assisi and after a somewhat longer drive in Gubbio, to the west via the road along the lake of Corbara Orvieto and in a southerly direction Spoleto, among other places. It is also true for Todi that in a single holiday you can only see a part of all the things in the surroundings that are worth a visit. Rome and southern Tuscany (Siena, Montepulciano, Cortona, Arezzo) can also be visited from here in day-trips.

Todi is an elegant medieval town, one of the most charming destinations in Umbria. It rise, austere and melancholic, on the top of a hill which overlooks the Tiber valley. Walking through the streets of Todi you’ll breathe an atmosphere of past. In Piazza del Popolo, which was the ancient seat of the Roman forum, you could visit the Cathedral, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo del Capitano and Palazzo del Popolo; They’re all symbols of the powerful past of this town. In this square you could alternate cultural visits to lovely pauses in the beautiful cafés or give a look to the typical workshops to buy the beautiful handwoven cloths. And don’t forget to taste the wine, Todi has a glorious wine tradition.

"Good location with panoramic views and a well kept swimming pool"

Guido, the property manager was very helpful and was quick to sort out any problems that arose. It would have been nice if there were more kitchen equipment e.g small bowls/containers and the electric toaster (shown in one of the photos of the kitchen). Both toilets were difficult to use due to limited access in front of the toilet bowls. We had a power cut due to an overload of appliances. There was no information in the property that this could happen and how to resolve it. The restaurant called Semiramide in nearby Melezzole was well worth a visit. The food was excellent and reasonable priced. It was closed on Tuesdays. A welcome pack of basic provisions(especially if arriving late) and an information folder of the property and surrounding area would have been helpful. Most of the other properties we have stayed in Italy have had a more personal touch. Perhaps we have been spoilt !!
