The Ilha do Sal region

Basking in the sun in the Atlantic ocean, approximately 450km off of the western tip of Senegal in Africa, lays a small cluster of beautiful islands known as the Cape Verde Islands. Having gained it’s independence from Portugal over 30 years ago, Cape Verde is now a republic and is known as the African Caribbean because of it’s tropical climate of continuous sunshine throughout the Year.

The island of Sal is only 30 km in length and 12 km in width and is one of the most arid islands with a lunar landscape, brown rocky plains and deserts made of sand. Located in the extreme South point of the island is Santa Maria with a wide variety of restaurants, bars and shops and where tourism is most developed, with the capital of the island, Espargos, lying to the North

Santa Maria

With endless days of clear blue skies, hours of warming tropical sunshine, crystal clear waters lapping along vast beautiful white sandy beaches makes this an excellent all year round location for water sport fanatics and sun seeking worshippers, with a wide range of activities to choose from.

If you are partial to soft desolate golden sand beaches, fine weather, spectacular scenery and a sense of adventure then the island of Sal will certainly not disappoint

Within walking distance of the quaint fishing town of Santa Maria where a hive of activity throughout the day where locals sell their hand crafted wares and fresh fish is landed daily at the jetty, which may be enjoyed at a vast array of restaurants and bars alongside live guitarists strumming Cape Verdean classics. Santa Maria, Portuguese for Saint Mary, was a former salt working village and is now the tourism center of the Island

All towns and villages around the Cape Verde islands have their own character and welcoming charm. Sal is probably the oldest of all the Cape Verdean islands, owing its existence to a volcanic eruption some 50 million years ago. Traditionally, the population of Sal have relied on salt collection and fishing; however, more recently, tourism and property have taken over as the main industries with Santa Marie being the main attraction with 8 kilometres of stunning beaches

“Best apartment in the hotel facility”

Reviewed 21 Feb 2016

Judith's appartment is, in our eyes, the best in the whole hotel facility. It is ground floor, very close to the pool and the pool bar, and also pretty close to the sea side. The terraza is still far enough away from the action on the bar to enjoy a peacefull recreation. The apartment itself is very clean and offers two bedrooms and two separate bathrooms. There is also a big flatscreen TV (I wish, I had one this size at home) and another one in one of the bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you need even to cook a good meal. There is the choice of booking the all-inclusive arrangement of the hotel, which we have not done, as we wanted to spend more time traveling arround. The appartment is on the ground floor and accessible for disabled people, also in a wheel chair. Concerning the bathrooms, it really depends on the level of disabilities. There are no additional handles next to the toilet and the shower/bath tub. The staff in the hotel facility is very friendly and helpfull, and Judith, who is I guess the owner of the apartment, did everything to make booking and stay as smooth as possible. WiFi by the way was available on the terazza, but not inside the apartment. Judith told us in advance though. Apparently there is free internet access over LAN inside, which we have not tried. All in all we have nothing to complain about. Thumbs up from us!

“Amazing appartment”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2015

We have had an excellent vacation at the stunning appartment of Andre & Judith. Both are great people and their help and provided information were excellent. Emails were always answered very fast. The location of the appartment inside Melia Resort is perfect and close to the biggest pool so you don't have to walk a lot to have a swim :) Melia is very clean and pretty with a lot of flowers and palmtrees. The appartment itself is in great shape and the owners really take care of it. Rooms and furnitures are as mentioned, kitchen is well equipped. We didn't miss anything at all. Service at Melia was exactly as we have booked it and we had no problems at all. We can highly recommend the appartment and will come back one day. Thanks a lot Andre and Judith!

“Perfect Apartment”

Lovely, well equipped and pool side location is perfect. Judith is so informative and helpful which instills great confidence when renting a property abroad, thank you for that. We look forward to being able to revisit sometime in the future

“Lovely Poolside Apartment in Fab Hotel”

Reviewed 9 Feb 2015

Stayed a week in the apartment which we thoroughly enjoyed. The apartment was in a perfect position next to the main pool, there was a couple of sun beds and a nice table chairs which we also made use of. We didn't take the all inclusive upgrade but stayed with the self catering option. The apartment was well equipped with all cooking equipment and a good fridge freezer perfect for poolside drinks with ice. The resort of Santa Maria was only a short taxi ride away and was 3euros in the day, 4euros in the evening each way, good to have the exact change so you don't get charged more by the drivers! There are some lovely little restaurants in Santa Maria - the best we tried was Chez Pastis, very small so have to book - we actually went twice it was so good! The host Herbert made us very welcome and the beef was amazingly cooked - delicious. Also the Atlantis restaurant and Barracuda (both beachside also had good meals and good service. I would avoid the Pubis restaurant - always looks busy and has live music however the toilet is disgusting and I was ill after eating there! The Sal Beach club bar and the Tam Tam Irish bar both show sports and have free wifi which was good. There was a very good ice cream/frozen yoghurt shop on the Main Street which did amazing pancakes, waffles and the best hot chocolate I have ever had! I think it is called Gelato or something along those lines - lime green branding and an outside seating area. The supermarkets are pretty small compared to the ones in the UK, the largest supermarket was the equivalent of a UK spar shop, this was called Casu and was in the main Santa Maria town. There is an additional supermarket about ten mins walk from the hotel which is pretty decent and handy if self catering, this is in Villa Verde and to get to go over the low wall on the other side of the road directly opposite the hotel and keep going straight on, the supermarket isn't branded and has no signs outside but there are security guards around if you get lost! There was daily entertainment on at the hotel, but it was pretty quiet and not really child orientated - we don't have children but we didn't see many around...might be different in high season. The beach is lovely and you can walk all around the coast from the hotel into Santa Maria itself - this is the long scenic route and took us about 1.5hr, but was a lovely walk, plenty of kite surfing to watch along the way. All in all we had an amazing holiday, Judith the apartment owner was very quick to respond to any requests, allowed us a late check out and returned our deposit very quickly on arrival home. I would definitely recommend the apartment and hopefully one day we will return, the island is developing and I think in a few years time there will be more to do and will attract more tourists to the area. - but as it is now its definitely a truly relaxing holiday with the 'no stress' motto being very fitting.

“True holiday pleasure!”

Reviewed 16 Mar 2014

This is our 3rd stay in this property, and just like the times before, we had a great holiday. The apartment is centrally positioned on the resort- so handy for all the amenities and the beach. We took advantage of the hospitality package, available at the resort, which gave us an all inclusive type arrangement. Our daughters age 13. & 15 enjoyed it too, though activities on the island are a bit limited if you have an adventurous nature.

“Fab Resort Hotel for an absolute pampering chillax holiday”

Reviewed 19 Feb 2013

This Resort Hotel is a great place to recharge your batteries. We recommend the `all inclusive` option. First time we have ever done all inclusive and it was a nice surprise. Massive choice of food which varied every day, 4 different restaurants. The only downside was that 3 of the restaurants had to be prebooked for an evening meal and aside from not always being able to get in you also had to choose your menu in advance which how do you know what you want to eat in 3 days time for your evening meal?? We found the service in the evenings at the prebooked restaurants was tremendously slow which when you have a child who is tired out with all the pool activities and wants to just eat and go to bed it`s not recommended but you could do the other buffet style restaurant which was very quick. The staff are excellent, very accommodating, great fun and great at organising activities if you want to get off the sunbed to burn off the calories. Bar service excellent. Maid service great. Could not fault the place. The apartment we stayed in was gr8. It was missing towels on our arrival but on asking staff we ended up with about 20 towels!!! We needed an internet cable which the hotel provided. Always felt if there was a problem getting it sorted would not be an issue however we had no problems. This is definitely a place we quite probably will return to as great for winter sun and to just relax. Thanks to our apartment owners Judith and Andre

“Fabulous holiday in Cape Verde at The Melia Tortuga Hotel.”

Reviewed 21 Nov 2012

We stayed for one week in a two-bedroom private rental apartment at the Melia Tortuga Hotel, conveniently located next to the main pool and surrounded by beautiful gardens. The apartment was beautifully decorated to a very high standard, and the fully equipped kitchen suited the two of us perfectly since we were not taking part of the all-inclusive deal, and could therefore cater for our own breakfast and snacks to enjoy on the lovely terrace outside. The apartment was kept cool by efficient air-conditioning, much needed in the sunny and very hot weather! The grounds are really clean and tidy with beautiful plants and flowers throughout the whole resort. Sal as an island is quite undeveloped, and you’ll notice new developments are popping up everywhere in the central parts of the island. You cannot help wondering what it will look like in 10-20 years time! We really enjoyed going in to Santa Maria for our evening meal and a couple of drinks, and to soak up the genuine atmosphere and mix with the friendly locals in town, we found that rather nice since it’s quite often difficult to get the real feel for a place because of it all being aimed at tourists and that is not the case here. Santa Maria town is easily accessible by taxi, always at the ready by Hotel reception and costs only 4 Euros. There are quite a few good restaurants and bars to visit. Lots of fresh fish and seafood on offer on the menus, but we also had some beautifully cooked meat dishes. We would certainly recommend a trip to Cape Verde staying at the Melia Tortuga. If you’re looking for a nice, relaxing holiday with loads of sunshine and a bit of a difference, this might be the thing for you!

“Luxury apartment in a brilliant complex on a beautiful island”

Reviewed 20 Nov 2012

I have just got back from an amazing holiday. The apartment has everything you will ever need and more in it , with all the luxury finishes you could hope for. The apartment offers great value for money with bars and restaurants on site the great thing about this particular appartment is the great pool side locations. Judith had recommended some great restaurants for us there were also great supermarkets close by. Fab holiday and will be booking to go again next year .

“If you want sunshine then the islands are great - if you are expecting more you may well be disappointed!”

Reviewed 7 Oct 2012

We have mixed feelings about our recent trip to Sal. The beaches are to die for and the weather is just great, but once outside of the resort it is very primitive and as self catering guests we found it extremely difficult to find any variety of foodstuffs, especially fruit & veg, I would therefore carefully consider this as a holiday venue for families, unless of course you are happy to go all inclusive....which actually given the cost of the rental apartment & flights we may as well done. Also as a self catering guest you go without room cleaning and sheet change which given the heat and the fact that you cook indoors make it feel unclean and this sticks in the throat when all other guests have a daily clean.......and we paid att least the same if not more. I think overall that owners need to be more explicit with all these details before booking, especially the information about supermarkets! We stayed at the Tortuga beach resort which was lovely overall, but as non all inclusive guests we were often overlooked and the costs of food & drink are very expensive, which with the lack of food available elsewhere means you have little choice. There was one member of staff who stood out & really looked after us so many thanks to you Jose, had you not looked after us so well I think we would have felt lost as no one else seemed really bothered. Overall then, would we go again? I think the answer is No, but we are pleased in a way to have seen the islands before they become too commercialised, it would have just been nice to have found something some-where in between.

“Pure relaxation- perfect for us”

Reviewed 16 Apr 2012

Really lovely facilites- we spent day after day wandering from beach to pool and back again! I would recommend you took the all inclusive package offered by the resort as we found the local provisions are limited. Perfect climate, friendly locals and safe environs- we would definately go again!
