The Algarve region

The Eastern Algarve is still relatively under-developed; its small resorts have kept much of their original character providing a quiet and relaxing holiday destination.

In contrast to the more rugged Central and Western Algarve, the coastline here has a tranquil beauty as it gently stretches towards the Spanish border. Ilhas (sand flats) protect the characteristic tidal marshlands of the Rio Formosa National Park - an area of natural beauty. Boat trips to these Ilhas allow visitors to enjoy the quiet beaches and warm waters.

Inland, the countryside is unspoiled and the border area (north and inland from the Guadiana River, stretching up into the Serra do Caldeirao) remains untouched by tourism. The area north to Alcoutim, west to Ameixal and south to Castro Marim and Sao Bras de Alportel continues to charmingly feel as though time has stood still.

The Algarve has an excellent and enviable climate reputed to be one of the best and healthiest in Europe so it is no surprise that this is one of Europe's best-loved destinations.

If you are after a more relaxed style of holiday, away from the hordes of tourists and water parks, then the Eastern Algarve may be the place for you.

Why is it so undeveloped? The reason for this is probably because the towns along the coast are not generally right on the sea. They are separated from the Atlantic by salt-pans, marshland and lagoons. These form part of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve which stretches from just south of Faro along the coast to the town of Vila Nova de Cacela, a few kilometres west of the Rio Guadiana river on the Spanish border.

The beaches you'll find along the coast are to be found on long sandy islands and outcrops, and Barril Beach is a good example of it, located on the Ilha de Tavira.

The wetlands of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve make this area of coastline, wild and interesting, in contrast to the red sandstone cliffs of the central Algarve and the rugged coastline in the west.

Further inland, the area is completely undeveloped. Small rustic villages nestle in the remote countryside. You'll find the local inhabitants going about their daily business, the same today as they did many generations before.

East Algarve

The town of Tavira is built on both sides of the River Gilao and is full of historic churches. There are also the ruins of a castle, a 13th Century moorish fortress. Only the walls remain, but it is worth a visit, if only for the great views you can get across the town and out to the Atlantic.
Another reason to visit, are the beautiful gardens next to the castle which are full of beautiful hibiscus flowers and fig trees. A great spot to sit down and relax.

There are some lovely walks along the river, and you can cross it via the Ponta Romana (Roman bridge), one of 5 bridges crossing the River Gilao. Its not really a Roman bridge, as it was rebuilt, having been destroyed by the great earthquake in the 17th Century. Half-way across it there are some benches to sit and relax.

If exploring churches is your thing, then Tavira is the place for you. There are a lot of them, twenty seven in fact. The church of Santa Maria do Castelo, near the castle and the Igreja do Carmo, which did have some quite impressive guilt woodwork inside.
