The Madeira Islands region

An oasis in the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira has wonderful attractions from Funchal's stunning jacaranda-lined avenues to the daring cliffs of Cabo Girão. Embark on a journey through it's past or simply wander the streets of the capital to encounter charming historical areas and picturesque squares. Numerous churches and convents date back to the 15th century, from the tiny basalt cave of Capela de São Vicente to the ornate interiors of the Sé Cathedral.

Agriculture is still an important part of the island's resources and visitors will see ingeniously cultivated terraces along hillsides everywhere. Traditional street markets brimming with colourful pyramids of produce are a great way to experience local life.

Madeira has a number of protected reserves that are a wonder for nature lovers. Walking trails reward hikers with breathtaking mountain views, while scuba divers can explore the crystal clear waters of Garajau Natural Reserve. Parks and gardens boast subtropical plants and a spectacular carpet of colour. Enjoy the annual Flower Festival in springtime.

One of the pleasures of Madeira is that the ocean is never too far away. Spend your days exploring the cliff faced coastline, pebbled beaches and natural rock pools, or take a ferry or flight to Porto Santo and enjoy the golden beach.

Santa Cruz

Located on the south east slope of the island between the valley of Seixo and Rosario and characterised by its mountainous terrain, Santa Cruz is 18km from Funchal and 5km from Machico. It is one of five parishes that make up the Municipality of Santa Cruz, together with Camacha, Canico, Gaula and Santo Antonio do Serra and is also the seat of the Municipality and City. With an area of approximately 32.7 square km and about 7500 inhabitants, the parish also includes the Desertes Islands, classified as a Nature Reserve.

Santa Cruz was one of the first places on the island to be occupied by the settlers, with settlement dating back to 1425. IT is one of the oldest parishes in Madeira. Construction, manufacturing, trade, services and tourism are the most significant economies of Santa Cruz. Farming was the most significant economy although more recently it has become less relevant. Subsistence farming is, however practiced today. Crops of potatoes, vegetables, tropical fruits and vineyards are grown by farmers. As for fishing, inspite of it's decreases, it is still common to fish tuna, skipjack, black scubbard fish, snapper and parrot fish among other species.

Santa Cruz is a region of deep valleys and tall mountains, offering its visitors breathtaking views of the magnificent mountains and the ocean. There is a veriety of scenic spots where tourists can admire the the landscape from the exuberant Baptista Orchard to the Almocreves Fountain in the higher altitude areas. Also worthy of a mention are the Promontories of the of Rosario, Sao Fernando and Rochinha, with splendid views over the ocean and the bay of Santa Cruz.

Sao Salvador Church, the main church of Santa Cruz is one of the oldest churches of Madeira, built around the year 1510 and has been a building of public interest since 1948. King Manuel I ordered its construction upon the rquest of Joao de Freitas, a nobleman and member of the Royal House as the existing church had become too small.
