The Marche region
The Marche sum up the whole of Italy in themselves. That's why a recent campaign said "The Marche: Italy in one region". Sea, mountains, history, art, local traditions, spirituality, nature, typical food and wine: in the Marche you can find all the best features of Italian culture and way of life. "The Marche is a distillation of Italy"
The Marche offers 180 kilometres of coastline, 26 seaside resorts facing the Adriatic Sea defined by beautiful beaches, picturesque bays, 9 marinas and 16 Blue Flag beaches, that certify the water quality and further services.
500 squares, more than 1,000 important monuments, approximately one hundred cities of art, 37 fortresses, 106 castles, 15 strongholds.
In the Marche there are 12 protected areas: 2 national parks, 4 regional parks, 6 nature reserves, 15 state forests.
The food in the Marche region equally shares from the bounty of the sea as well as from the countryside ; the region can boast an incredible variety of dishes, strictly based on tradition and local produce. The use of fresh, top quality materials assembled with the minimum of fuss marks Marche's food. As with any rural diet, much use is made of food gathered from the wild; mushrooms, game, nuts and field herb. Waste, too, is frowned upon, and many of the now most fashionable dishes were first developed to use up such things as stale bread or parts of the pig. Some types of food is guaranteed through Quality Assurance and Product Certification, such as DOP ( Protected Designation of Origin) and IGP ( Protected Geographical Indication).
Sant'Angelo In Pontano
Sant'Angelo in Pontano is a town in the Marches, in the province of Macerata, with more than fifteen hundred inhabitants.
The City of Sant'Angelo in PontanoMountain Community is part of the Blue Mountains.
The neighboring municipalities are: Falerone (FM), Gualdo Loro Piceno, Montappone (FM), Penna San Giovanni, Ripe San Gines San Gines.
Castles and fortifications of the town is the beautiful fortress of San Felipe. Churches and other religious buildings santangiolesi: Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia, called "Stones", Church of St. Nicholas Church of San Salvatore. For the fans of the works in the village of Sant'Angelo in Pontano not miss the Teatro Nicola Antonio Angeletti.
The Apennines on a side, the Adriatic coast on the other, and, in-between, a sea of soft hills, which are filled by old villages, protected by ring walls: these are the Marche.
he National Park of Sibillini Mountains covers an area of 70.000 hectares of protected land. It was established in 1993; the towns included in the park are: Fiastra, Bolognola, Visso, Ussita, Castelsantangelo sul Nera, Amandola, Arquata del Tronto, Acquacanina, Montefortino, Montegallo, Montemonaco, Pievebovigliana, Cessapalombo, San Ginesio, Fiordimonte, Pievetorina. The great limestone massif that stands in the southern Marche includes one of the highest peaks on the Italian mainland - Monte Vettore at 2,476 metres - and the wild tarns and windswept high plains of the Monti Sibillini provide some of the Marche's most spectacular landscapes. The mountains take their name from a legend that one of the sibyls - the prophetesses of classical mythology - hid here in a cave on Monte Sibilla known as the Grotta delle Fate (Cave of the Furies) when she was chased out of the underworld. Chiselled by glaciers and limestone erosion, these mountains possess some outstanding natural sights. These include the high natural tarn Lago di Pilato (tradition makes the unlikely claim that Pontius Pilate is buried here), and the awesome Infernaccio Gorge. Other delights include the great upland plains which are a mass of flowers in spring. The most impressive is the Piano Grande below the village of Castelluccio, famous across Italy for its lentils. Different types of trees can be found in the park : the oak, the hornbeam , the beech , but also natural pastures with very rare and valuable species such as the edelweiss of the Apennines and the willow dwarf, that is considered the world's smallest tree. The fauna is also varied; there are different mammals, such as the wolf, the wild cat, the hedgehog, the roe deer; some birds populate the park too: the golden eagle, the goshawk , the sparrow hawk and the peregrine falcon. In Lago di Pilato lives Chirocefalo del Marchesoni, a reddish crustacean.
