Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

The cottage is located in the hills south-east of Lucca and north of Pisa.

Florence is 1 hour east (1 1/2 hours by train), Pisa 40 mins away, the ocean is less than 40 mins away.

Sant'Andrea di Compito

The village has 2 good restaurants and 2 grocery stores, plus larger markets

a short drive away.

"Tre Tigli" pizzeria is famous all over Lucca for crispy-crust, delicious

pizzas and local dishes, while "Il Circolino" features a varied international

menu with seasonal specialities....the pastas are home-made.

Sant' Andrea village is the site of the annual Camillia Festival in March.

Thousands of camillia plants reach full bloom during these week-ends, attracting

many visitors from all over the world. Some of the "trees" are over 200 years

old, thriving in the warmer microclimate of the valley. Olives are an important

crop here...our trees produce some of the best oil in the world.

Nearbythere are plenty of opportunities for hiking and walking on the local trails.

The ambitious visitor might consider a hike to the top of Monte Serra, a round-trip

jaunt of 10 km.

Wine tasting at Montecarlo is a must. The Il Rifugio house wines are a product of

this acclaimed region.

“Wonderful B & B”

Reviewed 7 Feb 2013

I recently stayed at Il Rifugio and would like to thank the owners Bill and John for their wonderful hospitality. The B & B is just perfect . It is situated in the middle of a very quaint typically Tuscan village with beautiful scenic views. The house is great, the bedroom with its lovely comfortable bed and fluffy white bed linen is very luxurious, the breakfast is devine and the gardens stunning. All in all it is the best B & B I have ever stayed in and would highly recommend to any future travellers.

“Glorious garden, stunning home, great bed, clean, perfect hospitality”

Reviewed 10 Dec 2012

This is my second off-season stay. Have stayed both April and November. A perfect location for hopping off to Florence or hiking the hillsides near Lucca. Located in the central area of a charming historical Tuscan village from which you can walk to everything -- the best and most economical dining in the area, the flakiest and freshest cornettos/croissants - the most peaceful views. The hosts have a wealth of local information - history, directions, costs - and if you love colorful and vibrant gardens, this is the place to be. My family and I will come back...and back...and back.

“The quintessential Italian experience”

Reviewed 16 Sep 2011

I stayed here by myself in May of 2009 and couldn't wait to bring my husband and return to this magical Italian village and this beautiful little Italian Villa. The owners Bill and John have the most beautiful garden and have made every detail in the rooms perfect. I loved the Italian antiques throughout and I am still dreaming of the view from our window of the village and the church. We traveled all over the country and Bill makes the best cup of cappuccino! They took care of us like family and we can't wait to return! We recommend this for a romantic getaway!
