Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Dumfries and Galloway has a wide variety of attractions and activities for visitors of all ages. From rolling hills to beautiful beaches the countryside provides spectacular views for those on foot, bike or travelling by car. There are many towns and villages across the region each with their own attractions from Gretna Green, famous for its weddings to Wigtown, Book Town.

For younger visitors there are attractions indoors and outdoors. See how chocolate and ice-cream are made and sample the finished product, or visit one of several open farms or even a wildlife park.

A range of seasonal activities take place the in region. The Spring Fling is a very popular open studio arts and crafts event. Throughout the summer many of the towns and villages have gala days or Riding of the Marches celebrations with Dumfries having the annual Guid Nychburris (Good neighbours) event. Dumfries, Moffat, Wigtown and Stranraer all have a summer agricultural show with plenty to do and see with local foods and crafts as well as the show animals.

Sanquhar

Viewforth is situated in Sanquhar, a Royal Burgh with an interesting history. Home to the worlds oldest post office Sanquhar has a variety of shops, pubs and cafes as well as a museum. The Southern Upland Way passes through the area and there are many great routes to walk or cycle for the most experienced cyclist or hill walker to those looking for a gentle wander. The River Nith flows past the town, a trout and salmon fishing river and Sanquhar also has a golf club and swimming pool.

Sanquhar has a good selection of shops and amenities including butchers, bakers, pharmacy, grocery shops, newsagents and filling station. There are also several take-away restaurants serving indian dishes, chinese dishes, fish and chips and pizzas all within an easy walk of Viewforth, home delivery also available.
Supermarket home deliveries can be arranged directly to Viewforth, ask us for details when booking.
There are several pubs and hotels in Sanquhar with some serving food. There are also cafes and tearooms.

The annual Riding of the Marches celebrations take place each August and draws people from far and near. Events run throughout the preceding week building up to the Saturday which begins with the Burgh piper playing in the street at 6.00am and is followed by the horses and riders leaving to ride the marches. The Queen is then crowned and there is a street parade. There is entertainment all afternoon and the massed bands play in the high street in the evening.

The Crawick Multiverse, a land art designed by Charles Jencks, is just a short walk from Viewforth and offers interesting walks and fantastic views of the local area.

Close to Sanquhar are a variety of other small villages and attractions including Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest village, where you can visit the Lead Mining Museum and pan for gold in the hills! For winter visitors looking for sporting activities, there is the Lowther Hills Ski Club in Leadhills. Drumlanrig Castle and County Park close by and has extensive grounds for walks and cycling as well as an adventure playground, gardens, craft shops and the castle itself. The village of Thornhill has a variety of interesting shops as well as cafes and hotels serving meals.

There are several places within easy reach for interesting day trips. In the north of Dumfriesshire, Viewforth is close to the borders of both Ayrshire and Lanarkshire. It is just 40 minutes drive to the coastal town of Ayr with its beaches and activities. Viewforth is just over an hour from both Glasgow and Edinburgh by car (or take the train to Glasgow from Sanquhar) if you would like to incorporate a day in the city shopping or sightseeing as part of your holiday.

“Super cottage in Scotland”

Reviewed 24 Jun 2013

Booked this cottage for a short break at really short notice. The communication was excellent with pleasant efficient e-mails. The cottage was booked and paid for within a matter of minutes. The owner asked if we would ring her to let her know our time of arrival on the day. We did and were met at the cottage. The cottage was clean, cosy and very well equipped. We also had free wifi access. It had a large well kept garden and also a small field adjoining which could be used if we wanted. At the bottom end of the garden was a duck pond but it really was big enough to be called a lake. The neighbours were extremely friendly, chatting to us and giving us advice on eating and shops in the village. The village had plenty of shops for self caters and a couple of pubs which served food and was easily within walking distance from the cottage.

“Just what we wanted, perfect!”

We needed a place to stay for a couple of nights whilst attending the Scottish Kennel Club Championship Show. I noticed this property because they took dogs but also we could book for just 2-3 nights. I sent an email enquiry as to how many dogs I could take & received a very quick reply saying all four would be welcome. We ended up taking three dogs and three adults. The bungalow was easy to find in a nice location close tot he centre of Sanquhar but with a lovely garden and use of the field next door for the dogs (beware if your dog can jump/climb - one of ours discovered she could get up the bank on to the road - luckily it is very quiet & she did come back, just surprised us!). Viewforth Cottage was very clean, nicely laid out and the owner was very friendly and helpful. It is an ideal base for exploring this part of SW Scotland (which we have done several times over the years) We enjoyed our stay and will be going back again for shows in future years and also maybe for family holidays as well.
