The Umbria region

About Umbria
Umbria is very much appreciated for its diverse landscapes. Nature in Umbria means rhythm, slow pace and quality of life. Nature here is part of the villages, history, people and life style that not does not comply with today's modern mentality. The landscape is smooth and unmistakable . You can recognize its physiognomy whether you arrive from north or south; the natives miss its hills and colours so much when far away and tourists are brought to slowly enjoy nature in peace and quiet. Umbria is a land of water, with lake Trasimeno and its three islands, that are protected ecosystems of the regional park tucked away among the vineyards and hills of the Perugian territory. Lakes Piediluco and Alviano (natural oasis) in Terni, Corbara and Orvieto are perfect locations to practice sports and for all kinds of events and activities, even wildlife watching. Umbria is a land of water thanks to its rivers. Tiber river, has been running here for centuries and has influenced the place with its history giving life to small and big towns (Perugia, Todi, Orvieto) but also creating special farming lands and landscapes that are ideal today for excursions and outings. River Nera near Terni, that the regional park takes its name from, is also perfect for sports and rafting, besides many other smaller water streams. River Nera is located in the romantic area of the Marmore waterfalls that are near Terni, which is the city of Saint Valentine, the patron of romantic love. Famous thermal baths were also built here thanks to the area's important water sources (San Gemini, Fontecchio, San Faustino, Nocera Umbra). But the Umbrian nature is not worth discovering just for its water but also for its mountains, that are mostly smooth but can sometimes be rather harsh. Monti Sibillini National Park, a mountain chain that is part of the Appennines between Umbria and Marche, is a unique area in Europe thanks to its rich biodiversity. Mount Vettore is the highest mountain in the region tucked away among the Sibillini mountains. In June they offer a unique experience when, along with the highland of Castelluccio and Pian Grande (1270 metres of altitude) they are the ground where hundreds of rare species of flowers grow. Talking about rarities, we cannot not mention Colfiorito and its regional park: there is amazing archaeology and flora and fauna in the marshes of Colfiorito. Like the rest of the Umbrian nature, the mountain landscape is perfectly embedded in history. Monte Sabusio is an example: it is another regional park which frames and treasures Assisi, the shrine city.

Whether you love water, the hills or the mountains, in Umbria you will forget everyday stress and routine, wander through its villages, paths and landscapes without simply limiting yourself to admire the already well-known beauties of its seven parks (six regional and one national), but also discover its many hidden corners. Watchwords: take it easy!
