Situated high in Garfagnana, on the outskirts of the village of Caprignana, with dramatic mountain views, Caprignana, is a very sympathetically restored quality Country House and large private pool.
The spacious, light and airy property is actually split into two 3 bedroom apartments, giving a large group privacy from each other, but with plenty of room to all eat together both inside and out.
The house has a real traditional feel, with all modern comforts. There are plenty of beamed ceilings, traditional style flooring in some rooms, and quality solid wood floors in the ‘night zones’. Much of the furniture is hand made, as are the kitchens, and the chestnut wood windows…
Finished to a high standard, there are 6 large bedrooms in total, 2 of which lead out onto a terrace with stunning mountain and garden views.
There are 4 bathrooms, two of which are en suite shower rooms, whilst there are 2 luxury family bathrooms, with shower cubicles and separate bathtubs.
For daytime living there are two good quality open plan living/kitchen/diners, giving plenty of space to gather together. There is also a large uncovered dining terrace overlooking the garden (with table, chairs and umbrella), and a covered loggia with garden, pool and mountain views, for shaded dining and relaxing .
Each kitchen is equipped with oven, 5 ring hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave, and there are 2 flat screen SAT TV’s, DVD players and CD’s.
Outside, as well as the terraces there is a brand new infinity style pool 6M x 12M plus Roman steps, and decked sunbathing area. Enclosed garden, plenty of parking, BBQ & wood oven and totally stunning views!

The Tuscany region
The Tuscan Region of Italy is well known for its warm balmy summers, beautiful countryside, rolling hills, mouth - watering food, and of course its towns and villages, rich with mediaeval architecture…
The Garfagnana region of Tuscany, often known as its ‘Green Lung’ is situated away from the milling crowds that can often be found at the most famous Tuscan locations and is totally unspoilt, remaining untouched by tourism.
The scenery is spectacular, green and mountainous with views of both the Apuane and Appenine mountains at every turn…And, due to the altitude whilst the weather can be very hot, it is always pleasantly cool for sleeping…
The food is usually home made, using home grown produce, and is typically simple and extremely tasty. Prices here remain very reasonable due to the fact that food is prepared with the locals, and not tourists in mind…The local wine is cheap and surprisingly drinkable!
The pace of life is slow and peaceful – spend your days enjoying secluded picnics, swimming in rivers, or watching locals play bocce or ‘cheese throwing’. Visit hundreds of ancient hill top villages, or relax at home basking in stunning scenery.
For ‘townie’ days, visit the mediaeval towns of Barga, Lucca, Castelnuovo, with Pisa and Florence within easy reach too…

Situated in an edge of village location, the property is within easy walking distance of a bar (which will provide basic snacks too) and little grocers shop. Beside the bar is the village. The property is only a few minutes drive from the Orecchiella National Park, ideal for walking and close to the fortress of Verrucole, with Orzaglia, the village where locals still do 'cheese rolling' at weekends within walking distance. There are plenty of hilltop villages, walking and picnicking opportunities in the immediate vicinity, but other distances are:
Market town of Castelnuovo 25 minutes
Mediaeval town of Barga 40 minutes
Lucca, 90 minutes
Pisa 120 minutes
Florence 2 hrs 25 minutes

"Fabulous place with stunning views, away from it all"
We enjoyed a wonderful week in this beautiful place. Il Girasole is set in mountainous countryside so a car is essential. The villa was gorgeous – stylishly presented, very well maintained and absolutely immaculate, with everything we needed. Special touches of freshly grown vegetables and provisions on arrival were much appreciated, as was the delicious home-made tiramisu which appeared one morning as well! The pool was kept beautifully clean and the views were stunning. We would certainly recommend this place for a fabulous holiday
We are glad you loved this beautifully presented and well cared for house. Carla sends her best wishes and hopes to see you again. Thank you! Lorraine at tuscan-retreats

"A little piece of heaven"
Far from the madding crowds, this is such a peaceful and picturesque place! The climate was perfect - lovely warm days and cool nights and NO MOSQUITOS!!! Only an hour from the gorgeous walled town of Lucca that is definitely worth a visit. About 30 mins drive from larger supermarkets. We enjoyed early morning strolls down tiny roads, beautiful mountain vistas around every corner, wondering where they would lead us and finished with a cappuccino the village café/bar while we waited for the bread van to make its deliveries. This was the nicest house that we have ever stayed in - spacious, well equipped, spotlessly clean and decorated to a very high standard. Perfect for our two families to enjoy - together but separate. The pool was fabulous and our children (aged 10 to 18) loved the water polo and the night-time swims. My favourite part was the long table on the veranda downstairs where we could all gather for evening meals, watching the sun set in the mountains. Clara and Giancarlo were wonderful hosts, very welcoming and friendly. Even though we didn't speak a word of Italian, we managed to communicate just fine and their son, Alessandro, has perfect English when the need arose. The baskets of freshly picked produce from their gardens were a lovely touch. One evening Clara made pizza dough for all 11 of us and she and Alessandro showed us how to use the wood-burning pizza oven - what great fun we had cooking our own pizzas and how delicious! The nearby Verrucole fortress was a very enjoyable outing - fun and interesting for all age groups. Would definitely recommend to anybody and hope to go back ourselves!
Thank you for your review. We are glad you loved the peace, views and the climate here. It is a place that gets in guests bones, and they come again and again!
