Location description from owner

Southern Mexico region

The state of Oaxaca has peaks almost 10,000 feet (more than 3,000 meters) high, caverns among the deepest in the world, virgin beaches, hidden jungles, and luminous valleys that house populations where, as a crucible, cultures of all people who once lived in its midst come together.

The City
Oaxaca, the State Capital, declared Humanity’s Cultural Patrimony by UNESCO, owes its fame to the beauty and harmony of its architecture, the richness of its cultural traditions, the wide variety of its typical foods, and its soft temperate climate, spring-like throughout the year.

San Felipe de Agua
Casa Union is situated in San Felipe del Agua, 15 minutes from down-town Oaxaca, the Zocalo.
San Felipe del Agua used to be an independent little village just outside of the city of Oaxaca. Nowadays, San Felipe is a beautiful quiet, residential area. Casa Union is 7 minutes walking from the village’s church, built around 1650, next to the main square.

San Felipe del Agua

Oaxaca and its surroundings offer countless attractions, cultural as well as natural ones.
San Felipe is a quiet village, where people still know and greet one another. Next to a few cosy bars and restaurants, there is the church with next to it the market – twice a week, Parque Cololosio, a playing field and playground and a gym.
Social and cultural activities are key in Oaxaca. There is the Guelaguetza, or los lunes del cerro (Mondays on the Hill) an annual indigenous cultural event (normally celebrated on the first two Monday following July 16th); and the celebration of the dia de los muertos, (The Day of the Death) a traditional family celebration to reunite with beloved ones even with those that passed away.
Downtown Oaxaca offers the zocalo, the lively plaza, where people stroll along restaurants, bars and shops and the 18th-century cathedral, as the center of social activity in Oaxaca. A little further along the Macedonio Alcala you’ll find the beautiful Church of Santo Domingo (Iglesia de Santo Domingo), the biggest and probably most wealthily decorated church of Latin America, with next to it the beautiful botanical garden. A few blocks further La Basilica de Soledad (with aside the famous nieves de chahuita, the famous local ice crème). Just to mention a few.
There are innumerous museums, the Rufino Tamayo Museum of Pre-Hispanic Art, the Oaxaca Regional Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Oaxacan Art, the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, and, and, and…
There are colourful markets spread over the city, where you find food, (local) dresses, artesania (local handy craft), and whatever you may need or wish.
Nobody who comes to Oaxaca should mis Monte Alban, the ancient Zapotec capital, one of the most important archaeological sites of Latin America, just outside the city. Also in the surroundings of Oaxaca are Mitla, another ancient Zapotec city, built after the Zapotecs were forced out of Monte Alban and the Tule Tree, the large cypress tree that is said to be over 2,000 years old.
Given the many people that pass by Oaxaca, it offers great opportunities for shopping.
