Samoens

L'Ancienne Fromagerie is situated in the French Alps, in the medieval village of Samoens. One of the prettiest villages in France, and is the only winter and summer sports resort in France to be listed as a 'Monument Historique'. Ideally situated, it is just 200m from the historic village centre where you can find the boulangerie for fresh bread, croissants and cakes, supermarkets for stocking up on essentials and a wide selection of specialist shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. In winter the free ski bus is a few minutes walk away, which takes you directly to the Grand Massif Express lift.

The area provides spectacular scenery, mountains. including mountain lakes, botanical garden, national parks and provides the centre for almost every outdoor activity imaginable, for all ages, summer or winter.

It is close to the borders of Switzerland and Italy, and day trips can be taken to Chamonix, Annecy or perhaps Lake Geneva, the largest lake in Europe or Mont Blanc the highest mountain.

Samoëns is only 1 hour from Geneva International Airport, 540 miles from Calais, 20 minutes drive from the motorway exit , and the TGV train station at Cluses.

The Grand Massif is the 4th largest ski-linked area in France. It rises up to an altitude of 2500m. Surrounded by grandiose scenery, the Grand Massif affords a truly breath-taking panoramic view of the French side of the Mont Blanc mountain range. The 5 linked resorts - Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt - are remarkably diverse.

During the summer, the weather is usually in the high 20s - perfect for swimming, walking, cycling, rafting, or visiting neighbouring towns and lakes in France, Switzerland or Italy.

The location is brilliant and right from the chalet door step are routes for road cycling, mountain biking and hill/mountain walking.

Try the challenging Col du Joux Plan cycle ride or one of the many rides on http://www.mapmyride.com/fr/samoens-rhone-alpes
or perhaps walking into Switzerland from the chalet. Leave the car behind and take to the mountains and stay in one of the many refuges and break the walk, easily accessible from the chalet.

A mountain bikers paradise, hundreds of miles of well signposted cycle paths, and a wide of range of length and difficulty. In the high season it is possible to take bikes up the mountains on chairlifts and to cycle down.

Samoens' outdoor leisure complex is situated an easy walk along a footpath next to the river. The leisure centre has two beautiful lakes for fishing and boating, football pitches, 6 tennis courts, basketball/skate park, play park for children, archery and a golf driving range into the lake!

Two large swimming pools (one for 'swimming' and the other for 'playing'), an infant's pool and a 60m water slide (tennis, swimming and archery are payable).

Also within the leisure complex is the Tarzan-style "Indiana Park" forest park, which consists of climbing rope ladders, crossing suspended bridges between trees then whizzing down zip lines! There are different courses based on age and ability.

The market is one of the largest in the Haute Savoie and well worth a stroll around on Wednesday mornings, selling everything from speciality food, wine, clothes and gifts.

“Ideal Location for Village and Slopes”

Reviewed 24 Feb 2016

Party of 9 people staying for the February half term week. The Chalet was centrally located giving easy access to both the Town Centre, and the Petit Train which gives access to the Grand Massif Express Gondola and the slopes of Samoens. The kitchen was fully equipped with appliances and utensils, and we found ourselves eating in most evenings. The utility room containing washing machine and dryer also came in very useful. The Chalet was well heated throughout, although did have minor issue with the hot water supply which was quickly resolved by the owners. I would have no problems either returning for a further stay or recommending to family and friends. Fantastic week had by all.

“Wonderful chalet, perfect location, cycling heaven”

We had a fantastic fortnights holiday at L'Ancienne Fromagerie. This is a beautiful chalet, immaculate, very comfortable and welcoming. It has been beautifully modernised but retains its wonderful character. Jayne and Richard, the owners, have provided everything you could possibly require for your stay, like a home from home. Jayne even purchased a coffee maker when I asked if the chalet had one!! Location is perfect, a short flat walk to the centre of Samoens, great for me as I have limited mobility. Even though it is so close to the centre it is situated in a lovely quiet residential area. Samoens is a stunning village, the botanical gardens are beautiful, wonderful choice of shops also restaurants to enjoy the traditional Savoyard cuisine. The outdoor swimming pool is immaculate and good fun. My husband an avid cyclist, conquered several Cols during our stay, amazing location for cyclists. Thank you Jayne and Richard for a wonderful holiday, look forward to returning next year :-))

“Beautiful chalet, amazing place!”

This was my first time skiing and I absolutely loved it! The chalet was fantastic- well equipped and beautiful decorated! In addition, we were greeted with a lovely welcome package on arrival. The chalet is located a short walk from the village centre. Samoens is a beautiful village with lots of restaurants and shops, We bought fresh croissants and bread from the bakery every morning for breakfast and packed lunches. As as first time skier I had lessons with ESF. The instructor was brilliant and very patient and by the end of the week I had gained much more confidence on the slopes. I would highly recommend visiting this beautiful village and wonderful chalet!!

“Lovely, really well designed chalet”

Reviewed 24 Feb 2015

Had a lovely time at L'Ancienne Fromagerie. Cosy chalet, there were 9 of us and we all fitted in just fine. The fire was super and kitchen really well designed, it had everything we needed. The beds are very comfy. We would recommend the drive up to Vercland to miss the queues in Samoen, but it was half term. No problems at all and would definitely recommend. Thank you.

“Great chalet and situated in a lovely area convenient for all activities”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2014

We found the chalet ideal as we had my eldest (18) and his girlfriend (17) staying in the downstairs which meant they had their own area and bathroom etc. Chalet is situated a 2 min walk into Samoens main part and handy for all bars and shops. The Casino supermarket was very handy when needing small bits and Carrefour only a 5 min drive for bigger shop - just watch opening times as we got up late a few times and had to wait until afternoon for it to open. The wifi was great for all kids (12,14, 17,18) and kept them happy along with some basic English TV channels ...never knew Travel channel was so interesting !! Nice outside area where we had a couple of BBQ's and great outside table and chairs. All very clean and good to arrive to clean beds all made. Very cosy lounge and open plan kitchen layout...love the rugs and cushions :-) Recommend the rafting with Ecolorado ...we had David and he was a great host and really made the trip an adventure We have rafting before and this was by far the best time we have had. - I still know how I jumped of that high pipe -- GREAT FUN !! The local outside pools were a favorite and we spent 2 days there and we all loved it. Great to have the pool where I can swim some lanes and work off the cheese and wine ! and what views while swimming..spectacular. Overall a great holiday and loved the mountains although we never managed to get up there...still a great reason to return as there is so much to do.

“A lovely, tradional style chalet.”

Reviewed 13 Mar 2014

We had a great time, Bethan and Lucas were there when we arrived and were very welcoming and pleasant. The cake was delicious and bottle of wine very welcome....one of many we consumed during the week. It was a nice little touch on arrival. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and we thought it had very nice decor - traditional and pretty but not in a too fussy way. The large number of board games and playing cards were good, we cooked two nights and had great craic playing various games. There was plenty of information contained in the file on the coffee table about accessing everything in the village for someone who had never been there before. Bethan had given us her details if we needed to know anything but as some of us had been to Samoens before we were fine. We would consider renting the Fromagerie again and would recommend it.

“Very cozy chalet in Samoens”

We were very happy staying at "La Fromagerie",the chalet is very nicely decorated and provides everything you need. The wood burner is a lovely feature. The bedrooms are also very pleasant. It was really good to be so near the historic village and just a few minutes car ride to the nearest ski lift. We would recommend La Fromagerie as a excellent mountain getaway.
