Description

A stunning penthouse apartment on Boa Vista Island, with panoramic sea views, romantic and private.

The property has been built using the colours and style of Portuguese colonial architecture, with a single central courtyard, typical of the colonial past, overlooked by romantic wooden balconies.

A short stroll to the beach, beach restaurants and Sal Rei, and a short drive from the airport.

Outside: large private terrace, with sea views, 4 large sofas, outside table and chairs etc. It hardly ever rains, so this is fantastic living space.

A wonderful setting for a romantic holiday.

Location description from owner

The Boa Vista region

Boavista is an island of sand dunes, long white beaches, and clear sea. Originally named Sao Cristovao when discovered in 1480, the name Boa Vista caught on after sailors cried from the crow's nest of sailing barques Boa Vista (meaning Beautiful View). Settled in 1620, by Captain Rodrigo Afonso who obtained a permit for farming cattle and goats, it also developed potteries and weaving.

Boavista has a dry-tropical climate. Humidity is low. The average daily temperature ranges from 22C to 26C. Highs of 29C are seen in July/August with lows of 20C in December/January. Ocean surface water temperatures range from 22C to 27C, creating a maritime temperate climate.

There are two seasons, a dry season between November and July, and a "wet" season, with occasional rain between August and October. Daily hours of sunshine vary from around 6 - 7 between August and October and 10 - 12 for the rest of the year

Sal Rei

Turtle Watching - Every year, from late May to September, more than 3,000 loggerhead turtles (Caretta) come ashore on Cape Verde´s beaches, particularly at Ervatao beach, the third most important loggerhead nesting site in the world.

Whale Watching - organised half day tours are available to view these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Estoril Beach is situated just South of Sal Rei and is sheltered by the Ilheu de Sal Rei making it the calmest on the Island and ideal for families and the novice at surfing, kite-surfing, diving and watersports. There are a number of beach bars as well as the submarine diving centre and the Boa Vista Wind Club where you can obtain expert instruction in diving and wind-surfing.

Sal Rei has over 20 restaurants to choose from with both local and european cuisine.

Other activities include: whale-watching boat trips, horse riding, cycle hire, beach buggy hire, 4x4 hire, guided tours of the island, walking, Ultra Marathon

“Perfect holiday location”

Reviewed 3 Mar 2013

Casa Velha Penthouse exceeded our expectations in every way. Well equipped, clean, and a superb location. Friendly helpful staff. Great advice beforehand from owners re. currency, etc. It is a perfect location. Close to local facilities for shopping, eating out, etc., and adjacent to the most beautiful beach. Also very short transfer from airport, so no wasted time in transit. The whole experience was magical, and one we definitely hope to repeat.

“A real Haven to escape to”

Reviewed 8 Dec 2012

The Penthouse apartment is beautiful, we really felt we had escaped from life, great location, short walk to anywhere but out the way enough for it to be peaceful. The view from the bed is beautiful and on the roof terrace we felt like royalty! Amazing large space to chill out all to yourselves and watch the sunset. The beaches around the island are really spectacular and empty!!! Really do recommend hiring a 4x4 and getting off the beaten track. The apartment is also full of lots of information that was really useful for us to make the best of our time there.

“Fantastic Apartment!”

Reviewed 20 Aug 2012

We had a lovely stay, the apartment has everything you could want (apart from maybe air conditioning in the bedroom! - it can get very hot!) Clean and tidy and very spacious. The kitchen was well equiped and the bedroom had plenty of hanging space and hangers in the wardrobes. The roof terrace is the best part of the apartment with lovely views of the sea and town and great sun sets in the evening. We spent a lot of time relaxing and reading on the terrace and with a bit of shade and the usual breeze it was not too uncomfortable even in the heat of midday. The apartment is well located as it is only a few minutes walk to the beach, shops, bars, restaurants and even the hospital. The staff were resonably friendly and were happy to help with any queries we had. We tried breakfast one morning but weren't too impressed so didn't bother again! (Not very good and certainly not cheap). The apartment is unique and ideal for couples.

We normally find the bedroom fan keeps it reasonably cool, and at other times we just open the doors to the balcony and watch the lights of the yachts twinkling in the bay. However, these guests stayed in August when sometimes it can get hot... Casa Velha offers a continental breakfast which is basic but the coffee is good, and the evening cocktails are just scrummy!

“It really is as pretty as it looks”

Reviewed 6 Jun 2012

What a fantastic apartment - spacious, comfortable, well equipped with the best balcony area ever - perfect for relaxing. Within a few minutes walk of Sal Rei & the best beach on the island. Hire a pick-up if you can as the roads are an experience not to be missed - the beaches in the east & south are amazing but if you just stay in Sal Rei then you can rest assured that this is definitely the best beach on the island - the grass really isn't greener. The huge sweep of white sand around the bay is wonderful, turtles swim just off the shore & you can swim safely. Supermarkets are basic but go back to old-fashioned values & hunt out the fruit & veg market, fantastic butcher & baker. If you prefer to eat out then you won't be disappointed with the quality of the food in the restaurants.

We kinda like it too..... Yes, Estoril beach is the most sheltered on the Island so it is usually safe for swimming - however, be aware that the prevailing winds blow offshore. The butcher, baker, main supermarket and fish market can take some "hunting out", so do not be afraid to ask - we can help, but take a Portuguese phrase book and consider taking a taxi the first time to save walking around in the heat. Some of the supermarkets - and especially the bakery - do not look like shops from the outside.

“Dream getaway...”

Stunning, simply stunning. These apartments are brilliantly designed, with a high standard of interior design. Stylish, comfortable - and the MOST comfortable bed I've slept in away from home in a long and varied travel history! Casa Velha is a small development, maybe 10 apartments in total. It has an intimacy that really works - for those of us who dread the idea of big hotels and all-inclusive 'mass package' tourism, it's a great alternative. The Penthouse is the crowning glory in all this. Up on the top floor, you get a real sense of privacy and refuge, really important after a day's 4x4 off-roading. The terrace is brilliant - comfortable seating, stunning 360 views, and the perfect place to enjoy a sunny breakfast and get to know the local birds who came each morning in the search of the odd crumb. The Penthouse is light, spacious, has a well-equipped kitchen and a lovely bedroom with 4-poster that enjoys one of the best views out over the dunes and to sea. The staff deserve a special mention. The house-keeping was second to none - two lovely, friendly, smiley women who took a real pride in their work - and boy do they work hard. You should see them carrying large bowls of laundry on their heads up 4 flights. Poise and grace beyond most people's ken. All staff were a real credit: obliging, friendly and welcoming. And at least two of them make awesome coffee and mix an excellent Negroni. The breakfast is good value and good quality - well worth it if you don't want to make your own. Sal Rei, for its part, is charming. A small place, as Capitals go, but again with such warmth among local people. There's a great supermarket to buy all your groceries, and the Municipal market does all your fruit and veg and local cheese. It's also a great way to meet some local men and women and have some banter. And remember to pay a fair price - much food is imported. We spent simple days on Boa Vista. 2 weeks flew by, just having late starts, reading, chilling and watching 'city' life over a coffee in Esplanada in the main square, and then choosing a beach bar for lunch. Aliosis and Boa Vista Social Club are streets ahead for lunch, and right by Casa Velha. Walk down Estoril Beach to Chaves, hire a 4x4 and see Deserto de Viana, Espinguera and Praia Lacacao. Beauty beyond imagination. We LOVED Boa Vista. My advice? Go there now while mass tourism hasn't killed it and stay at Casa Velha. Just don't try to book the two weeks I want for my return visit...

Says it all really! One needs to accept BoaVista for what it is - these guests did, having researched the place beforehand, and they loved it.....
