The Brittany region
In its surroundings, why not visit:
•Cancale, a real haven of fishing and oyster farming, where you can taste oysters with a glass of white wine (though don’t forget to drink responsibly) whilst gazing out on a fine day to Mont Saint Michel, which is also an absolute must for a visit.
•The Cap Fréhel peninsula, where you can take a walk to the lighthouse, not forgetting the nearby Fort la Latte on the cliff-tops, but also the jagged coast and harbour at Erquy, Pléneuf Val-André or the splendid sandy Sables d’Or beach at Plurien.
•Dinard, renowned for its many magnificent coastal villas, its moonlit strolls, the view of the Rance estuary and its tidal power station, as well as the beaches at Pieuré and St. Enogat.
•Saint-Lunaire and its splendid beaches, the golf course at Saint Briac sur Mer or the Saint Jacut de la Mer peninsula.
•The banks of the Rance river, from St. Malo to Dinan, where you can visit:
•The Plage de la Passagère beach in Quelmer and its boat graveyard cove; one of the most beautiful villages in France, Saint Suliac; the Mordreux slipway at Pleudihen sur Rance; the Hisse locks at Vicomté sur Rance and its tow path for walks or cycling; the fishing huts on the mud flats at the northern tip of the estuary…
•Still on the banks of the Rance, from Dinard to Dinan, why not pass through:
•La Richardais on your way to Pleurtuit, to see the Mont-Marin castle at the water’s edge; the Jouvente slipway opposite the Plage de la Passagère beach; the Souhaitier chapel in the village of Mihinic sur Rance; the slipway and harbour at Plouër sur Rance; the pretty archetypal villages of Taden and Léhon…
Finish off at Dinan, with its medieval districts, fortified walls, aqueduct, views of the Rance river, the harbour and Rue du Jerzual street.
And last but not least, Rennes, the capital of Brittany, and its superb city centre.
Saint Malo and the surrounding area Places to visit in St. Malo and the surrounding area…
The region is brimming with historical sites…
First and foremost, the town of Saint Malo, famous for its privateers and fortified walls. Take a tour of the region and let the landscape guide you: the Fort National naval defences, Grand Bé island, home to Châteaubriand’s tomb, Petit Bé island, Cézembre, Dinard, Cap Fréhel peninsula…
In Saint Malo, why not visit:
•La Briantais, a splendid St. Malo style mansion with its wonderful grounds overlooking the sea.
•Solidor Tower and its archetypal little harbour.
•At sunset, the Cité d’Alet area that overlooks the Bas-Sablons harbour whilst offering an incredible view of the town’s walls.
•On the vast Sillon beach, relax at the spa, go sailing, go for a jog or a swim… right up to Rochebonne.
•Rothéneuf and its surroundings, and the famous Havre de Rothéneuf inland bay, taking in the Pointe de la Varde headland, or even visit the site of the rocks sculpted by a priest besotted with this coast.
•The Pointe du Grouin headland and its signal station assailed by the winds, but also the Duguesclin beach and its fine sand for a bit of sun-bathing.
•The many St. Malo style mansions built inland by local ship owners.
