Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Midi-Pyrenees region

The historic towns of Cahors, Albi, Montauban, Toulouse are within easy driving distance. There are fortified hill top villages, castles, cathedrals, abbeys, caves dolmens to visit. To the north is the valley of the Lot and its tributary the Cele, to the south the valley of the Aveyron and its tributary the Viaur. You can take boat trips, hire canoes and kayaks and bathe. There are lakes at Parisot and Caylus.

The vernacular architecture is of particular interest: stone farm houses with exterior bread ovens (fours a pain) and dovecotes (pigeonniers): wash-houses (lavoirs) market halls (halles) with grain measures and stone roofs (toits de lauzes), dry stone field shelters (gariottes or cazelles), water mills and wind mills.

One of the best ways to get to know the country is to walk and there are many well marked footpaths. Some are sentiers de grande randonnee - long distance foot-paths which cross France - the GR36 from the Channel to the Pyrenees, the GR6 from the Alps to the Atlantic, the GR65, the medieval pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostella. Others are local foot-paths, GR du pays and sentiers de petite rondonnee.

Spring and autumn are particularly good times for walking. There is an abundance of wild flowers, birds and butterflies, lizards - occasionally boar and deer. Wild food can be gathered in season, mushrooms (crepes, girolles, morilles as well as champignons), leeks, reypounchou (a kind of wild asparagus) black berries, sloes, medlars and chestnuts.

If you want to go further afield you can get up early and be at the Mediterranean or in the Pyrenees before lunchtime.

Saint Projet

Mas de Regourd is a hamlet just outside the village of St. Projet, a commune in the department of the Tarn et Garonne. It is on the border of the ancient provinces of Quercy and Rouergue. The climate is influenced by the highlands of central France, to the north east, and the Atlantic to the west. It is hot in the summer, mild to warm in spring and autumn, with moderate rainfall. We normally open the pool towards the end of April and close it around the end of September.

Basic shopping - for bread and groceries - can be done at Puylagarde (2km): there is a baker at Beauregard (5km) who makes bread in the traditional way, in a wood fired oven: it is well worth the journey. Butchers, chemists, banks, doctors are within a radius of 12km. at Caylus and Limogne and there are several supermarkets at Villefranche de Rouergue (24km).

There are outdoor markets near by with at least one being available each morning.
