The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region

The village of Saint Pierre de Chartreuse, home to the Grande Chartreuse Monastery, is tucked away in a Regional Nature Park just 26km from the city of Grenoble and Voiron.

The Chartreuse region offers a world of opportunities for the mountain lover - particularly in the winter and summer seasons. While skiing, snowboarding and ski de fond dominate the winter months, mountain bikers and hikers take to the trails in the summer.

The picturesque village is a world away from the busy crowded ski resorts of France. The ski area was developed in the 1930s, since when tourism has steadily grown. Recent years have seen the additional of new lifts and snow parks. The village is well-suited for family ski holidays as there is little in the way of traffic and there are plenty of activities laid on for children.

In the summer, there is an endless list of local attractions and activities. The best months to visit are July to September when the days are long and the weather is just perfect for being outdoors.

Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse

There are serveral music festivals over the summer and sporting events such as the Coupe Rhones-Alpes (mountain-biking) and 'Coupe Icare' Festival (paragliding), both in mid September. And of course, the Tour de France which passes through Albertville & the Belledonne Massif in mid July. Local activities include hiking, swimming, paragliding, mountain-biking, via ferrata, climbing, high ropes course and many many more.

Throughout the summer months, there are numerous artisans markets and many local Museums e.g. Museum of the Chartreuse Monastery & the Bastille Museum in Grenoble.

“The perfect getaway”

Reviewed 1 Mar 2016

A hidden gem in a traditional small French ski village. Everything we could ask for! No crowds, no lift queues, no english people (can I say that??). We spent a family Christmas here and enjoyed every element of it. The chalet is huge and full of character - it is excellently appointed just a short walk from the main chairlift and also into the shopping area of the village. This is a sedate resort - if you're looking for a party it may not be for you but for large family or friend groups that want the full relaxation program with good sport, good food and plenty of wine it would be hard to beat!

“Wonderful, I wish I could buy the place!”

We had a fantastic time at Villa Marie-Louise and our entire group were very sad to leave when our stay came to an end. The Chalet is perfectly situated in the heart of Saint Pierre De Chartreuse with panoramic views of the beautiful mountains surrounding the village, (no need to watch TV, you can just stare at the mountains for hours!). The chalet offered us everything we wanted, and all the rooms were as lovely as the next; each with its own charming characteristic. All the rooms, bar one, had a balcony, one even had two! A particular highlight was waking up to amazing views from the bedroom windows. With comfortable sofas for relaxing on after a day on the mountain, we were lovely and warm from the central heating and large wood burner in the heart of the chalet. As a group of keen chefs, the kitchen was fully loaded with every pot, pan, knife, utensil and even fondue set (cheese and meat!) we needed for cooking up a storm in the evenings. Saint Pierre De Chartreuse is a friendly and beautiful village. Although it is small, it has all the essentials: restaurants, bars, shops and health spa, (highly recommended after a few days on the mountain!). The gondola is a 2 min walk away, making it great for getting straight up the mountain in the morning and easy when you're tired at the end of the day. The ski area is small compared to the popular resorts, but more than enough to keep you entertained for the week, and no queues! At times it was so quiet it felt like you were the only people on the mountain, perfect for getting maximum riding time. Graham was our contact for the chalet, and even before we arrived he was amazingly helpful by providing all the information we asked for including weather updates. Once we had arrived, Graham greeted us with a welcome drink and made everything extremely easy for us during our stay. If there was ever anything we wanted help or advice with, Graham made himself available to us. By the third or fourth day of our stay we had already decided we would be coming back, and started looking at dates in the calendar. It's a really great place all round, we hope to be visiting Villa Marie-Louise for many years to come!
