The French Riviera - Cote d'Azur region

People who come to this region for the first time are always completely won over by the stunning scenery, the wonderful hill villages - all with their own character, and the friendlness of the people. But how could you not be happy living in such an amazing place!

Set back from the coast but still within easy reach you have the best of both worlds. Here there is a slower pace of life, free parking and less traffic.

St Paul has a good restaurant, L'Echappée Belle which offers menus starting from 24€ and the very obliging staff can serve you in a stone vaulted room in winter and an outside courtyard in the Summer. Apart from this, the bar does lunchtime menus, and there is also a small Pizzeria just off the square.

There is a general store which also sells bread, a hairdresser's, a butcher's, an estate agent's. There is also a cinema.

St paul en Foret has a post office and, opposite, a Mairie which doubles as a tourist office.

There is a community centre above the top car park. At the end of this car park there is a road which goes up past the Post office to a chapel, and then on to join another road where there are tennis courts and a club. This is within easy wallking distance of the village.

Saint-Paul-en-Foret

St Paul en Foret is a typical small rural village with less tourists than the other villages in the area. There is a friendly atmosphere with an all year round population. The Place de l'Eglise is bordered by plane trees which give a very pleasant shade in the summer, and there is a fountain which is a few metres from the studio.

The village is a good centre for visiting the area's many attractions, being not far from the neighbouring hill villages of the 'Pays de Fayence', as well as the areas many shops and supermarkets, and the other places of interest such as the Roman aqueduct near Mons. The scenery here is really beautiful and everywhere you look you there are new breathtaking views.

It is also a good area for walking, and is only 20 minutes drive from the Lac St Cassien where there are many water sports. There is also a smaller lake a short distance from St Paul itself, which has a signed walk around the edge.

Apart from walking you can play tennis at the municipal tennis courts, or play golf at the prestigious Terre Blanche course which is only about a 10 minutes drive away.

Outside of the Fayence area, the next village going South towards the coast is Bagnols en Foret which is about 10 minutes away. Here there are also lots of walks and stunning scenery. Further still you have the coast at St Raphael/ Frejus which is a very pleasant town, with lovely beaches and cycle tracks (cycle hire possible).

There are markets in all the villages. You can also drive to Le Muy in about 25 minutes, and visit it's impressive market on Sundays and Thursdays. The Le Muy Sunday market is the biggest in the area, and from St Paul en Foret it is an incredible drive with amazing scenery and no towns to go through except the lovely village of Bagnols en Foret. For the trip to le Muy you take a circular route which goes down the Route des Vins and the Gorges du Pennafort in one direction and use the Bagnols road in the other direction. As it's name implies, the Route des Vins has chateau after chateau with, again, stunning views. We go to one of them, Le Jas D'Esclans, to buy an extremely good organic cru classé which we bottle at home. (this costs 3€ a litre!).

Generally the whole area has amazing scenery, with gorges, rivers, olive groves and vineyards. And everything is within easy reach. Although there are two very good restaurants in St Paul en Foret, in the area as a whole there are many many more, with all prices and types to choose from.
